How to start up / cycle your new pond ?

So thinking way ahead , I build my pond , window in , fill it up Bakki shower plumbed in , drum set up, bio chamber full of k1 ,
Now what ? I have had tanks all my life so know all about the cycling process and maturing the filter BUT ........ How the hell do you set a 4000 gal pond going ?

with tanks I know people use drops of ammonia and just feed food into the water to feed the filter , also people put fish in ( suicide squad ) knowing the filter isn't ready to take and process fish waste ,

do do you buy some cheaper koi , or goldfish and gradually add to the bio mass while testing the parameters to watch what the filter is dealing with ? Is there pond bombs or like like to start off the filter ?

    Paul

I cant recommend fishless cycling enough. You can just do filter media but I did it whole pond, 1litre of strong ammonia off ebay, 6-7 weeks, job done. All fish in at one go, no stress, happy days.
    Fishless cycling for more info.

Most people end up using a low number of fish to do it, simply because when your new pond is built it is incredibly difficult to be patient

If you have the will of iron then fishess cycling is definitely the best thing to do. Or start your media off in some aerated dustbins right now so by the time your pond is built you will have a rock solid biofilm on it. You do have to really watch the KH levels in dustbins though, as it's very easy to get them pH crash otherwise.

    Hi Paul
    i used this:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kleen-Off-5...s%2C156&sr=8-2

Good to go after a few weeks, and dead easy...if you have a Seneye you can watch the NH3 go up and down as filter bugs establish an remove from water...

Did you use the whole bottle Scamp, or put it all in over a few days weeks etc?

    Thanks

Cheers Scamp, there's no another chemicals in it and its safe to use for the purpose needed??

Hi Tom no it’s fine, unscented diluted ammonia. Obviously you need to monitor your NH3 as it drops add some more..that’s where a seneye is good as you can see the rise and fall as the cycle matures..I used to add another dose as NH3 dropped to below 0.1. As bugs establish you can see NH3 drop quickly, then u need to monitor the Nitrite readings..patience needed, but worked for me..cheers
