Plumbing for a BD with purge
Is this the correct way to set up my DB?
Plan on using a nice swept bend up towards the drum.
thanks

Hi,
Would it not be better to have the ball valve after the bend?
This way you could stop the water going to your drum when you purge the bottom drain pipework, if you put it before the bend then you will always need to have the valve open for when you purge the pipework.

oh that's a good point.
I kinda have a fear of slide valves.
I was thinking that if the slide started to leak I would have no way of servicing it .Other than plugging the bottom drain.

If it's a money thing can you not put a slide valve then a rubber end cap . Ball is the way to go like but on budget maybe

Agree with all above, but if the slide did leak a simple remedy is to put a 4ins boot on the exit and a 4ins end stop, that would cure it.
All you have to do is undo the end stop and open valve.
The way you have it now is easiest if you ever have to drain the whole pond.John

I have 2 4" ball valves and 2 4" slides in my possession so I might as well use them (2 bottom drains).
I might double up on safety and put a rubber end cap after the slide valves .
Maybe I'm wrong but I can't see water/crap heading to the drum if I was to open the slides to purge the drains?

Just a thought, would it be better to put the slide where the ball is,as it wouldn't really matter if it seeped a bit.
As the drain one needs to be water tight.John

If using slides I thought they were best used in normally closed situations?
I read they are more prone to failure if they are left open because the crap gets into the seal.

I'd agree with above swap the ball valve and the slide valve over, fit 2 ball valves or as per drawing but with an end cap on the drain.
Slide valves are notorious for leaking and when I cleaned my Eazy Pod out last weekend I forgot to open the slide valve on the inlet and my 10K LPH pump running at about 60 watts which I think is 80%? it was pushing through it a little bit. As a means of isolation slide valves are OK but on wastes then ball valves are more reliable.

slide valves are ok if your not opening and closing all the time,if its somewhere getting plenty of use then i would sell the slides and buy balls,,,,andi

Best overall solution is as Andi says sell the slides and go all ball.
But the cheapest use of what you've got would be leave as is in the drawing and add a straight rubber connector (£7.14) to your slide and an access plug or socket plug on the end of that to stop leaks ... all in that would be under £13 delivered or you could just go and pick them up from your local Toolstation ...

I have used loads of flexi rubber boot fittings on my QT build and I have even used them to fit pressure pipe fittings onto pressure pipe so I can strip the hole thing down when I have to move house and found that 4" flexi rubber boot fittings fit 4" waste and pressure pipe and also fit over 3" waste and pressure pipe fittings. So you may find that to get a flexi rubber boot fitting to fit over the outlet of a 4" ball valve you may have to go for a 5" flexi rubber boot fitting if you don't want to fit a short bit of 4" pipe into the valve?
