... And whilst I was in the 'dabbling' mood, I glued all the bits together for my adjustable ball valve. This means I can drain the filter tanks and see how much gunk they've gathered so far.

... For the moving bed I got a £5 air stone on ebay. It's not as big as i wanted but it wasnt £20 like the others I'd seen. So it'll do for now.
So when I do the big pond and add a bottom drain, so you lot don't stone me to death. Do I Need an aerated BD if I'm running a large air driven moving bed?Last edited by Alburglar; 02-07-2019 at 10:19 PM.

Put one in if you want one or not.
That way later down the line. You have one in case you change your mind.
Take last year with the massive heat wave.
In my opinion you would have needed it.
We needed lots of air last year.
Also in my case. It's part of my cleaning

Ok. Yeah probably a good idea to 'future proof' it.
I had a look yesterday they seem like a £30 fitting with £100 added to it because its for 'Koi'. Seems to be a lot of that in this hobby. I cant believe some of the prices for basic filters. Which are essentially plastic boxes filled with media. It was the same in the marine aquarium hobby until the Chinese got it right and started making good gear.
I think I'll figure out something and then add an air fitting. Their must be some sort of equivalent in the building trade, drainage or something out there.

Tangible pond returns. That go in the pond
Mine are 2 feet of the bottom and makes the water circulate and helps clean the pond by moving the water for bottom drains and wall skimmers. Plus your air from bottom drain helps
Hope that explains TPR.

I bought a basic 10" chlorine filter, i didn't bother with 2 or 3 stage because I have a bag of carbon in the filter. I gave the pond a top up, but what do people do with the canister in between use. Do you leave it full of water or empty it? I suppose if you emptied it you'd need to flush it out for 5mins before each use?
... Apparently the answer to that is yes flush the 5 micron chlorine filter through before each use. You can store it either wet or dry.
However, the activated carbon 2 or 3 stage filters, then once they've got wet and 'activated' they have a limited life after that, So unless you're running a constant trickle in type water change then the carbon is pointless As you are not getting the full use Out of them. Just Stick a bag of carbon in your system somewhere like I've done.

Seeing as a filter house is a distant dream, i thought I'd make a sound deadening box for the air pump out of some foam sheets I had. I will fibreglass it all at some point.

Yeah We'll have to see about that. There will be an inch gap at the bottom but if that doesn't suffice I can drill Some holes and put a louvred vent plate on it. That way the sound will at least be directed at the floor.

I'm making one for The lay z spa pump too. That thing is driving me potty at night with the windows open! (and probably the neighbours too! ). This one will have a flip up lid so us and the kids can still get to the controls easily.

Well i ran out of good resin half way through and had to use some ancient stuff i found that was all gloopy, but its 75% done. I just need some more resin to finish the back.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
