    14crazychris’s mini pond build

    Hi guys

As many of you know I had to pack in the pond due to finishing up with uni and going to work full time/ moving out at some point. The pond currently looks like this

But as promised I couldn’t stay out the pond hobby for long. I wanted to have something I could move easily, easy to maintain and low maintenance. Something that I can also take with me when I move out. I know it’s not really Koi related but it’s still technically a pond haha.

Here’s my new build thread, some of you may know what I will be stocking in it but I’m aiming to keep it a surprise until I get the fish.

So far the pond is going to be about 1.3m by 1.1m with a depth of 35cm.

Will keep the thread updated with lots of pictures and my progress along the way.

    Cheers Chris

Here’s the structure starting to take shape, building box sections which will all be held together eventually.

    Hi guys

Here’s a further update of the main frame starting to take shape, you can now start to see what the pond will look like. Once it’s finished and set up I will get a few species of floating plants to cover the surface. This will reduce predation but mainly act as a source for removing organic waste. Think I used 8 decking boards in total.

Added some little supports in each corner. Mainly this was for aesthetics but it also helped add strength to the corners as well. Coming together now, the internal liner is next.

So next step was the liner. I had an ibc tank that I used to use for growing on Koi ect. As I don’t keep the Koi anymore the tank was not needed. I cut it to the depth of the pond. This will provide a solid liner that won’t leak and will be robust when moving. The ibc tank will also be really easy to clean.

Next job was the insulation, I’m not sure whether the fish will be kept outside for the winter and heated or kept inside within an aquarium (another hint on what I will be stocking). The warmer water will help grow the fish faster and keep the plants multiplying quickly. Here’s a few pictures.

Next job was to place the tank inside the wooden frame. I placed more insulation down the sides. I then placed some spare insulation on the bottom and sealed it with a piece of old pond liner. I used a few pieces of wood underneath to help hold the structure together, this was also tied into the sides to ensure there is no movement in the wood.

So finally finished the structure and filled it up. No leaks which is nice haha, the area it will be sitting on will eventually be decked.

Cheers, holds around 360L after displacement and when not filled up to the top. Onto building the polycarbonate cover next.

    Looks fantastic mate.

To think it only cost you some pieces of decking - You'd pay an absolute fortune for a planter or something similar from the garden centre for that size.

Cheers, yeah I’m really happy with it, it’s about 1.2m x 1.3m so reasonable size. I’ve got a bit further with the build than currently on the thread but will keep updates coming each day. Similar sized decking ponds are around £300/£400 so saved quite a bit. More to spend on the fish!

    Cheers
