I don't know why the filters never need cleaning, they just keep running and running and as I said, they are filthy after 3 months but if I leave them for years they seem less dirty.

Awesome that’s great! Yeah I’m testing a few varieties of plants at the moment but I’m not getting on well with them, Fish eat them or they are getting sucked into the fountain ect. Only wanted the plants for fish cover and to remove nitrates but may have to have a rethink. Lucky you managed to get nitrates to go down that’s impressive!

    Cheers

So, left the pond for about a month and a half to mature and let the algae grow. Then I introduced the first fish. A bristlenose pleco, hadn’t seen the pond in over a month and expected the pleco to be dead, moved the filter and there he was. He’d actually grown a bit and lightened up in colour, must be all the natural algae he’s getting. The pond has been running about 3 months now so ready to introduce the feature Fish!

Very nice. The plecos like caves to hide in so thats probs why he was hiding next to the filter.

Yeah he ventures out sometimes but he has lots of space to hide under the filter Along with all the fly larvae that are growing in there. Not sure what the larvae are though.

So I tried a few plants out in the pond which didn’t seem to do too well, they kept floating around in the current and getting sucked into the fountain. I currently have them growing out in a blue bowl to see if I can propagate them. Some pics of the species below

My friend has some amazon frogbit which I’m going to try out as they look like mini floating Lilly’s. I may use a bit of air hose to create a section of the pond where the plants can’t get sucked into the fountain. If this works then it will help with the processing of the Fish feed and allow me to add more fish.

Yeah will pop into the aquatic shop and get some green air hose to match in, I can then use this from one edge to another to give the pond about 1/3 cover. Hopefully this should help suck up all the nitrates and reduce the need for water changes.

So, finally after about 3 months since the water first enterd the tank I stocked it with some fish! I orderd five fish which arrived in the post early the next morning. I will be adding another 2 in a few months time which will probably bring me to my stocking limit. Will have to wait for the plants to take over first! Here’s some pictures to tease you unless you’ve already guessed what they are

Really good! The pond had lots of blanket weed forming. After the pleco was introduced it all disappeared and he has been clearing some spots on the tank (seen below), surprised how much algae he has been eating. He’s definitely put on some size and is starting to colour up really nicely, shame he’s not out from under the filter much.

That would be cool! Don’t get quite big enough to be a cool feature for me though. The fish are more of a temperate species rather than tropical.

I would love peacock bass but would need a tank five times the size! Maybe in the future

Haha a 2000 litre tank would be ok for the smaller species, only get around 16”. Otherwise some Hujeta gars would be awesome with the Amazon frogbit!
