Made the second plant boarder today. They donít look great at the moment as I need the frogbit to grow out. Should have filled out nicely in about a months time. This should really help with sucking out the nitrates. Also got a flower come through yesterday.

Yeah that's pretty cool now ... plants will make a big difference quickly in a pond that size.

Just got to watch out for frogs and other wildlife jumping in and bringing parasites etc. with them ...

Yeah once the plants have grown out it should cover the green air hosing and look much nicer. Think the filter is stable now as Iím feeding around six times a day with no noticeable nitrite or ammonia. The pond is completely covered with polycarb so theres no chance of anything getting in. Will definitely watch out for frogs though as they were a huge pain in my Koi pond.

    Cheers

In what way were they a pain ?
Just getting in and not being able to get out?

Yeah they used to get in and then were trapped. They either would then die, get stuck down the bottom drain or I would have to catch them out. Sometimes had about 10 toads in there at once. They also can bring parasites too which was the main worry.

    Cheers

Very nice Chris, good idea regards airline tubing to hold the floaters back.. does the airline float without sagging in the middle, might try that on my other non koi pond to keep plants out of skimmer...cheers

Yeah it works well, it floats all the way round and doesnít dip anywhere. I opened up metal paper clips and placed them in the end of the tubing. I then bent these around the shape of the tank so they held in place on the sides. In a larger pond with bigger plants you could use larger tubing.

    Cheers

In case anyone interested, just another idea that I've used before to shape floating airline tubing and that is to push pipe cleaner through it so you can bend it to any shape you like.

New video of the Ranchu is on Youtube. This gives a much closer view of each fish. Just click the link below.

Managed to get my aquarium feeder working so this will provide two feeds for the Ranchu when Iím not there. Want to be feeding more than this but it only has two feeds max. Will see how it copes with the humidity under the polycarbonate too. Wrapped it in a bit of cling film to stop any drips getting into the buttons haha.

Under that poly-carb is there any risk of cooking the fish?

Could get hot very quickly under there.

My lean-to has poly-carb roof and hits 35C when outdoor temps are 23-25C.

Yeah it does get warm under there, I have a flap which opens up on it to help regulate the temps, I only have it on whilst the weather isnít too hot, will be coming off soon. Am going to make a net to go over it. I am worried about summer day and night time temperature fluctuations? Do you think this could be a problem?

    Cheers

Not sure Chris as I've not had a set-up like yours previously.

I had rows of glass tanks in a large shed which didn't have a door, but the shed was always shaded so they didn't get the heat of full sunlight during the day and were shaded overnight.

The smallest of my outdoor tanks was 6'x3'x18" and that coped fine all year round, heated during winter.

In your shoes I'd probably keep my heater set at 2 degrees lower than the tanks day time temp, so it would never drop more than 2 degrees in a single night.

When breeding I'd gradually drop the temperature by adding fresh cold water in the early evening so it would heat up naturally in the morning sun to induce spawning. That could create a swing of 3 or 4 degrees over 12 hours but obviously only as a one off.

Thanks RS, yeah good idea, I currently have the heater set to 18 but the water hasnít dropped below 22 yet. Will raise that temperature up so I donít get any swings. Already have some fry in another tank from them. Not expecting them to survive as Iím not trying but you never know. Will try and get the parts to finish the bet this weekend. Cant wait to now get some good growth on them for the rest of summer.

    Cheers

    They've spawned already?
Bloody hell.... Took me a few years before being able to get them to spawn!

Mind you that was back in the day when information was word of mouth.... No water test kits, no dechlorinators, nobody knew about cycling etc etc. Amazes me how they even survived let alone thrived and bred.

Yeah it has come along way, lots of changes in equipment and knowledge ect. Yeah I have had them about 2 weeks now I think. They spawned the day after they arrived and then five days after that. Put the plants I didnít want in a blue Koi bowl and then I had about 30 babies hatch. They swim occasionally but sit on the bottom. I have just left them too it as itís a busy time for me. Will have a proper go next year at trying to breed them. Want to get another red and white pair so I can have a go at spawning red and whites.

    Cheers

    Update

The pond is doing really well, the algae has changed and is much darker in colour. The plants have grown quite a lot already and are starting to cover the airlines as I wanted them too, once they reach out over the airlines by a few inches I will keep them trimmed back. The fish are eating loads too, around 6 feeds a day at the moment. The fry are now swimming around in a separate container and I reckon I have about 30 of them, currently trying to hatch brine shrimp but they donít seem to hatching and Iím worried the fry have no food to eat.
