Just another thought.
Do you have any plans to treat the decking?
I had decking as coping around the pond, it faded and went pretty manky in under a year.
So I replaced it all and treated the new stuff with Rustins Yacht Varnish (Satin), around £14.80 a litre.
The finish looks great and water just runs off it, definitely recommended.

So made a polycarb cover that sits inside on the corner joints of the wood, this allows most of the condensation to drip back into the pond. It’s also keeping the water nice and warm. Currently sitting at 23 without a heater. Will turn the heater on which will keep the water from dropping below 18 due to a the slightly warmer requirements of the species I will be keeping. Another clue

Last job before I could get it up and running was to put a filter in and get the wiring sorted. I used an all in one filter with a sponge, uv and pump. I replaced the biomedia section from the standard crap stones. I know everyone in the Koi world is against them, as am I, but the filter is only going to support about 7 Fish and the pond will eventually be covered in plants. I managed to pick it up on ebay brand new for half price so was a win win. I replaced all the bio media with 3 baskets of bioHome mini ultra to assist with filtration. The flow rate is about 7 times turnover an hour.
Next was the wiring, as my previous pond was shut down I used the old switch box from this. I wired in the filter and a heater, I will probably also add my small air pump in the coming months.
Here’s some pictures
Cheers

If you do end up needing to upgrade the filter, an Eheim 2217 classic would be perfect for that.
I have 2 on a 5 foot tank and never clean them out. By never I mean one ran from 2006 till last year when I had to take the media out to use elsewhere and 2nd one has been running since 2014 and never been cleaned out. Planning on cleaning it this year before limescale builds up and seizes the impeller.
If you clean them after 3 Months they are filthy. But if you leave them for years they seem to self clean.
EDIT: The Eheim 2217 appears to have been renamed as the Eheim 600, but it's the same unit - 20w and 1000 lph.Last edited by RS2OOO; 01-06-2019 at 12:31 AM.

Got to be something with low oxygen requirement and small when adult ... unless your gonna move them on ... not minnows but heated ... could be dannio's then ... maybe tiny tench but that would just be temporary or stickleback's or gudgeon? 18oc min ... I'm intrigued ... something unusual I hope ...

Awesome! Thanks Rs! I have a back up filter and pump which is a single vortex, with an inner chamber of alphagrog and 3 foam set. It’s a cloverleaf model and will work well if the current filter doesn’t do the job. If not though I will definitely keep that in mind.
That’s pretty amazing how those canisters have lasted! Cant believe how well they’ve done for you without cleaning! Must be low stocking densities. Guess water changes help a lot.
I do like the current filter, I have it set up so it has a fountain for oxygen and then a nozzle which currently pushes the water round and prevents detritus from settling. As it’s also a self contained unit there’s no chances of leaks, and if the filter blocks the flow will simply slow down and not cause any back pressure ect. Might have a look at adding some more biomedia to it though.
Cheers

It’s slightly different but nothing too unusual I’m afraid, max size of the species will be about 6/7 inches, however I know they can get bigger. I haven’t seen anyone else on the forum keep the fish in a pond though so I think it will be a first. Tench would be cool but yes they would outgrow the tank. I think Rs is probably the only one that knows what I will be stocking, but I’ll give you another clue.
They are normally kept in aquariums and are a genetic mutation of a well know species, temperature tolerance ranges from approximately 8-28 degrees.
no more clues until I reveal the species next week
And to throw a spanner in the works I will actually be keeping another species in the pond to keep the algae at bay
Cheers

If it's not that different ... is it fancy goldfish and pleco's for the algae?
Hmmm fancy goldfish can be quite happy down to about 2c though ... so I'm still super intrigued ... with such a small pond and heating it could be many different fish ... but it's got to be something that's available for delivery ...

With tanks I do keep stocking low. Do 70% water change every fortnight without fail.
Sometimes weekly in summer, more to clean the brown algae than anything else.
Nitrates come out of the tap at 20, and somehow they go down to zero within a week.
No gravel, plants or ornaments in the tanks, just bare most of the time but do decorate them if having lots of visitors for BBQ etc.
I don't know why the filters never need cleaning, they just keep running and running and as I said, they are filthy after 3 months but if I leave them for years they seem less dirty.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
