G4 before fiberglassing
So do you put the G4 on and let it dry before starting to fiberglass or do you start the fiberglass whilst it’s tacky? It’s going to be really slow to add a coat of G4, wait half hour or so before adding a second coat, wait half hour or so before adding third coat and then finally wait another half hour or so before fiberglassing if that’s the case.
Any tips.

I did 1/2 the pond at a time. Applied a coat of G4 and waited for it to go tacky and applied grp over the tacky G4.
I read, that if you wait for it to go hard, you gotta sand it and apply another layer for a key. I didn’t sand it though and just applied a layer on top.

Just one coat of G4 you did then?

I did one coat yes, but I had a couple of walls left over of product, so took the liberty of applying a 2nd coat to some walls and the floor. It helped as it didn’t dry out whilst I was fibreglassing.
My understanding, the layer of G4 was mainly used to prevent minerals from leaching through the wall into the pond. Some people just applied a layer of resin.
As your fibreglassing, you don’t need the full 3 layers of G4. As 3 layers is the suggestion if you plan to use G4 as the finished waterproofing layer or if you apply pond paint.

Expensive stuff, but can’t go wrong with more huh?
Here’s some pictures of my 1st grp attempt.
I did 2 layers of 450gsm matting.
So far been 2 months. And no leaks. It did leak at a pipe joint into the return valve. It was GRP related, but there’s a lesson learnt there.

Looks good. I’m a bit nervous as the Mrs wants to help and she won’t take no for an answer. Think I’ll be getting her to do the G4 whilst I crack on with the glassing. Did you go back and finish the floor after majority of it has set? Trying to work out as to how you climb out the pond whilst doing the whole floor.

I did 1/2 the pond one day, and the other half another.
When I top coated I used a long roller to do part of the floor.

I bought it mail order. Might send some of it back. As Kenny said just put one coat on. I read I needed three but must have read that with just that and paint. Not glassing on top.

Aye, the G4 wasn’t 100% necessary, as I mentioned above, there is a view some people didn’t apply G4 and just used a layer of resin. Also in most YouTube vids, none of the GRP fibreglassers mentioned anything about G4. ( although understandably most did it on insulation boards ).
It’s one of those things... for example some people use pressure pipe underground and some people use regular drainage pipe. Better be safe than sorry I guess, and depends on what you can live with when something doesn’t go right ;D.

I wish I had some help, you want someone who can hold your matting for you and pass it over whilst you roller, and also to mix the resin. Each batch of resin lasted for one sheet of matting for me, otherwise it jellied out. If you can get her in there, get her to consolidate, whilst you move on to the next matting.
Seriously, I did 18 sheets if I could remember (and count) and I pretty much was sprinting to make sure it didn’t go hard on me. In theory it is a 2 person job.
Remember the dust masks, you don’t want to breathe in the fumes. Even if it’s not a problem, you don’t want the risk of getting high on a time critical job. (I remember my builders doing my roof, they ended up getting high and was laughing uncontrollably and talking smack by the end of it)

Agree, get her to consolidate it will enable you to cover more with less waste.Iam a qualified roof fiberglasser and the biggest skill is in the mixing quantities (resin/ hardener). If in doubt mix small quantities. You cant really mess up consolidation so its a good job for the mrs and keeps her involved!ATB

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
