    Pump for waste water system

I need to upgrade the pump on my waste water system and was thinking is a fixed rate pump going to be a better option than a variable rate pump?

I am looking for something around 10000 lph flow rate.

Would the short stop start cycles be better for a sump pump a fixed rate pump or a variable speed pump?

Probably will need to add a water level switch of some kind.

As it is only going to running for short lengths of time the power consumption isn't going to be much of an issue.

At the moment the waste water empties into a tub which is about 2ft or 600mm diameter and about 12" or 300mm deep. I may be changing this to a rectangular tub if I can find the right one.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

I used a dirty water pump from Amazon inside a water butt sank down in the ground with nexus waste pipes emptying straight in the top

that's a heck of a lot of water if only needed now and then, why would you want to shift 10 cubes have you a massive head height to overcome?

just use a sump pump built for the job, they are dirt cheap at screw fix.

That was one of my options but wasn't sure I'd have enough space plus need to keep things as a temporary set up as much as possible as we may be moving in the foreseeable future maybe 6 months to a year?

It's not the head of water it's just that with the altered waste outlet for the Eazy Pod now flowing much quicker than it was before the current 5500 lph pump can't keep up with the flow as it was just about coping before so thought going for a 10000 lph pump would be a safe upgrade.

Maybe the best way to go is a bigger tub and keep the same pump? As the Eazy Pod holds about 100? litres of water when doing a wash out as it's pump fed and the water will be up and over the height of the bottom of the overflow I was thinking a 100 litre tub would be another possible option? Or maybe bigger pump and tub as the QT filters maybe emptying into it as well later on?

The original way I had the waste going from the Eazy Pod to the tub was via a 38mm hose tail clamped into the outgoing side of the ball valve on the waste outlet then a length of 38mm flexi corrugated hose just pushed onto it and then run into the tub. The routing of the pipe was over the top of the tub then down through a hole in the side of the tub and ran round the bottom of the tub so it had a restriction from the hose tail, then another from the bend into the tub then there was about 1.5m to 2m of pipe in total. Now it just comes out of the ball valve via a 2" flexi rubber boot elbow and then diagonally down about 50cm of 2" pipe so it has a fraction of the restriction it had before. When I opened the ball valve last night it virtually half filled the tub in a few seconds so I can't see the current 5500 lph pump keeping up. But at least it should help with the flushing out of the Eazy Pod now

If I was looking at a sump pump with a float switch which one would be the one to go for or which ones should I avoid?

Also will any fit a 38mm pipe?

Was thinking the second one as it has a higher flow rate and think the first one may not be too much quicker than the original - may have another look as the flow rates are lpm not lph so just need to multiple by 60 to convert them

I have used one of these 24/7 for the last year as the return supply from my multi chamber without a single issue it automatically stopped when a rubber connection split thus not draining the pond dry

Thanks Mike, that must have cost you a fortune to run as it's 400 watts

Just had a look at the spec and unfortunately that's a clean water pump I need a dirty water pump as it is removing the waste from my Eazy Pod which has all sorts of muck in it.

I hope the majority of the time my solar panels compensated for the cost

sorry didn't think about the dirt, but they do a dirty water version of their pumps I believe

Google zoeller pumps, they specialise in grey water / sewage pumps. They are bombproof too. Try this site also. https://www.sumpsandpumpsdirect.co.uk

Thought you might have had PV to to help with the running costs.

Yes the 2 links I put up were both dirty water pumps.

Does the elbow where the hose tail fits move round at all or is it fixed?

    Thanks Dave.

They only appear to do 2 that are suitable and the smaller one may not keep up with the flow from the waste outlet and be able to pump up to the top of the water butt as it only had a flow rate of 7200 lph before head loss pressure and the next one up has a slightly higher flow rate but at about £155 maybe a bit OTT price wise plus it has a strange semi automatic setup that doesn't make sense to me.

Not going to rule them out just yet though.

Regarding sump pumps if it was me personally I would only go for one with an integral float switch in the future.

I've had situations where the float switch has got wedged, either causing it to run dry or for it to not run at all, leaving me with a flooded filter pit.

If that isn't likely to be an issue for you, and you are in no rush, keep an eye on these 2 Titan pumps from Screwfix, they sometimes have them on offer for £29.99 and £49.99 respectively:
