With Simons set the vertical 2" pipe could also double as as an overflow?

Guess it could but have never seen one taken off bottom drain pipe.
Used run off into a tank with an adjustable pipe that could be adjusted.
Mine now has two, one off the drum and one off the skimmer

As high as possible is the best option as Fred said but if you can't for what ever reason with an NRV it doesn't matter.

The only time it could be a problem with an NRV is if the water runs back down the air line and sits against a closed check valve or NRV and the water freezes in the air line which could split the air line. I'm only thinking what would happen in my set up as the air pump is only on when I clean the Eazy Pod but if running all the time then you shouldn't get the same problem?
Forgot about them none return valves. Nice one frim

It's easy to do as your pipe comes up and T's off to go to the filter put a branch in instead. Then I reduced two 2" pipe and came up above water level and just, just run the airline down it.
It needs to be a few inches above the water line because when you perge the drain it may force the water up the pipe and flood out slightly. You connect the valves etc all in the same way you normal would.

    Morning Fred.

Your idea is the best way to do it to be sure of nothing else going wrong but the NRV is a way of getting you out of trouble. Maybe go for a raised air pump and an NRV then you can forget about the possibility of anything being syphoned back up the air line. For the price of an NRV compared to the price of an air pump being replaced I would go for both - belt and braces

Morning mate.your right and i agree.
My pumps are 2 foot above water line .and 5 foot from grond level.
Never any water coming back. And when i turn on . Instant air. So i don t think there is much water in the line.
Thats why i love it on here. You learn all the time. But a lot of the time you quote what you know yourself and what works on your own system. And yet there is lots of other way to do things.
Have a good day mate. I am going to be repotting all day. Was out all day yesterday getting my new suit for young st sons wedding on Saturday. Hate getting dolled up.

    Hi guys,
the new pond is still a bit off but so far I've gotten a Aqua Forte DM (not VM)vario 20,000L (main return) and an DM (not VM) vario 10,000L (skimmer line).
I know I want the TMC 55watt UV,
I am 99% sure I'm going with the Nexus 320.
Last thing I need to decide on is an air pump.
I'd like one unit to do the 320 and the bottom drain,Is this too much to ask from one unit?

    Thanks

    Slight Edit !Thanks Frimley

Don't you mean DM pumps? or are the low voltage ones VM pumps?

As for air pumps I'm not sure what you need for a nexus but had a quick look on Coastal Koi site and the biggest one they do is an Air Tech 150 lpm then there is the Aqua Eco Hi Blo that does a 120 lpm. SECOH are meant to be very good pumps too and they are more powerful than they appear to be going by the way they rate their outputs apparently just not sure how big they go as I just looked at one site to get a bit of an idea for you.

I have a ea 150 and ea 95. one on the bottom drain and one on the nexus. but I reackon my ea 150 could do the both of them. what you have to do in my opinion
is work out how deep the pond is, and then look for a pump that will do it. I went for a ea 150 lph pump because my pond is 6 feet deep in water and also 3 feet above ground.
like I said earlier in the thread there are cheaper pumps out there. but I will stress the ea pump is a good pump. look at the graphs of the pumps. when looking about.

I have two EA 75 air pumps. I tried running one off the bottom drain and one on my nexus 220 but the bottom drain was too violent. If I run both the bottom drain and 220 off one pump it's too little so I'm now running a valve off the bottom drain line which is T'd into the nexus i.e. the excess air not needed for the bottom drain is going into the 220 so 130 - 150 litres feels about right to me for my setup, if you are going 320 then as Fred said, 150 would be about right IMHO.

The EA 150 is serious money

Good info thought,I suppose I can start with one air pump and see if it can drive both.

Obviously there are other brands and I wasn't saying go with the EA. Mine have been fine though.

You need to work out the total cost of ownership i.e. upfront and running costs. A cheap pump may cost you more in the long run in electric, it may not...! I'm building a second pond at the moment, I'm not sure what air supply I'll go with yet but I know I want to keep the running costs down as the Mrs is already starting to frown at the electric and water bills!

I just had to double check my sanity as to why I went with 2 x 75w rather than 1 x 150w but it looks like 2 x 75w is around £50 cheaper than 1 x 150w and uses 88w compared to 106w so there was method to my madness at some point.

    Thanks Lee,
Yes I want to keep the watts low too,
Yes two EA 75 is definitely an option for me too.
I'm a firm believer in buy cheap buy twice, but also a believer in diminishing returns !

I use these and no problems,a lot dont like them but they are a piston pump and a bit noisier than others and ok on electric.

    Thanks john,
I dont think noise will be too much of a concern for me.
Might be an option to get me started.
The Jebao air pumps seem extremely good value, especially if bought from aliexpress.

I have two and one been running for three years now with no problems.

I sit mine on a soft bit of underfelt because it is vibration that makes the noise.

I've got one of those that I use for boiling my Eazy Pod - think it is the 80 lpm one. OK so it's louder than the other air pump I have that is running all day every day but as it's only used for a few minutes at a time as and when I clean the Eazy Pod it's not an issue. Might give the underlay trick a try John
