    Fibre glass or not?

    Hi All,

I am about half way through building my new grow on. It’s W1.5 L1.5 D1.0, and have made it from timber and OSB board.

I cant decide between fibre glass or box weld liner. Has anyone done fibre glassing themselves? 1 10m fibre glass pack is cheaper than a box weld liner, but obviously installing a liner is much easier. The fibre glass will add more additional strength i think?

Is fibre glassing that difficult on this small scale?

    Thanks

    Adam

Hi Adam,Google fiberglass over wood and look for "fiberglass site.com" on you tube he is an American guy and he shows how to glass a box.
Quite easy to do but very messy so you need latex gloves, cheap paint roller etc.
You have to put on some resin and hardener let it go off a bit before any matting, all explained in the video.

I've done a few roofs before and its basically painting, everyone in the trade says the difficult part is getting the resin to hardener mixture ratio correct and take it steady, keep a steady pace and plan it out, where two pairs of gloves, one over the other, get all your material ready and cut to size, when I did my roof I was told that OSB was the only cladding material for roof work, although it does soak up the resin

Alternatively you could stick some kingspan/PU foam onto it and save money on resin?

Its not as hard as some people will make out, generally the biggest problem in a pond is the size and the time constraints with the resin

As John says, watch some videos on Youtube

I dont think it would be hard to do one that size ,mine was a DIY seive very awkward to get down to the bottom in the end I poured the resin into the bottom and used a small roller.
Look for that video very informative exactly what you want mate.

my 450 gallon tank was done 2 years ago. two of us. one mixing and one applying the resin, it was going off pretty quick. as it was very warm. thats why the two of us got involved instead of one person.
when we was doing the flow coat ( top coat black ) this was pulling pretty quick, as in drying. make sure it is well sanded. before top coat. for sharp edges. and the fumes where very strong.
so we had masks on. definately the best thing we did was fibre glassing. also make sure you get all the air bubbles out, as you apply the resin.
we both watched the video first. the one john has mentioned. good learning video.

I got mine from Fibreglass Direct, I always look to make sure its Lloyds approved, when they did my pond they told me to make sure if I did do some myself to make sure its Lloyds approved

fibreglassing is a doddle, there are some who would have you believe its a dark art that you must pay thousands for, but its simple, just prepare well, measure your catalyst accurately, according to the temperature on the day, and off you go.

Going to go against the grain here.

I personally would stick a box weld liner in there.

Cheaper, easy to add extra fittings / returns at a later date, easier to dismantle if you ever need to move it, easier to extend if you ever want it bigger.... etc etc.

I've just finished extending my pond using box weld, had I gone fibreglass originally it wouldn't have been financially possible, or practical, and I couldn't have extended it with just a week off work.

On the other hand, if you know 100% you'll never need to move or extend it for many years, fibreglass is obviously the more permanent structure and looks better.

Somebody has to throw a spanner in the works

Another plus point for box weld liner is its more forgiving on wooden structures, it can be modified but it can also go with the flow if the wood shrinks/dries out or expands if it gets wet and to be honest, its a grow on tank, how pretty does it need to be
