small mud pond
I dug a pond in clay about ten years ago, for the most part the water level does not drop too bad. But in drought years its been close to drying out in the shallow areas. In the photo, around the island is shallowest, and even though its about 1m to 1.5m deep in the winter, in the summer some parts I can walk across to the island in my welly boots. And it never filled to the level I wanted it too, it has a natural seepage point somewhere, possibly in a seem of Kent ragstone, so the jetty I build to take into account an expected water level is too high out the water. Under the jetty even in high summer its till about 2 m.
I am just saying because if you do not line it with imported blue clay right to the grass level, it wont fill up.
Removing the top soil layer you have suggested may help, but the clay I can see in your pic is not great for water holding. Blue clay is what is wanted, if you can buy in some of that. But whatever you use it really needs compacting well.
Traditionally us farmers used to put the cattle into the hole after the clay was put in and the cattle tread it in really well. But today pond diggers use a spiked roller to push and press the blue clay.

And looking at your hole, the other issue is the side walls collapsing. with no liner, gradually the sides will fall in until a natural slope forms. I doubt even packing clay up the sides to the top will stop it. I thought we sloped my pond sides really gently, but as it gradually filled more and more of the sides fell in until it is how you see it now.

Thanks, these are really good information I did not know.
I'll have a constant flow of water in this pond , about 1000 liters in day .This would only be used for koi fry during the summer .

I dont see the point of risking it, why not just drop a liner in?

Could you not liner then clay to make sure it's water tight and better for the fry

It will be interesting to see it all full, In theory it should hold water provided the sun doesn't crack the surface between the water and the top in summer, looking good
