its a very curvaceous path so I don't know what to do now, it needs to be flat and easy to walk on for the old farts in the family + a grand daughter

I’ve got a plastic pallet for it to sit so even if there is a little bit of moisture in there, which there shouldn’t be, it won’t rot the base of the filter.
My first design was to have a fully sunken pond with a bridge over it, well it was actually going to be a floating path with 600mm x 300mm granite slabs and a 200mm gap between them, I was also doing a sunken filter pit with a very big sump (over 250 litres) , the purpose of the really big sump was for filter cleaning, it would allow me to dump a lot of water very quickly without flooding the filter pit, but as soon as I heard the words "Your going to be a granddad" all my plans changed and I had to do a half raised pond, but at least I got to have a window in it

Make your sump as big as you can whilst you can

Be a long while I hope before that happens. Lol. Also kids are not allowed into the back yard without us. You’ll be able to see the pond from the French doors at the back anyway. Lol

So the hole is pretty much done. Having to move the filter pit slightly but not an issue. Can I have advice on types of block I should NOT use please? I know it should be hollow with rebar and concrete filled but majority of the pond is in ground apart from 2 max 3 blocks high on one side. I didn't use hollow blocks, I used solid 100mm blocks laid on their side and backfilled with concrete, then you have pressure from the water against the blocks, against the concrete and onto the soil. The key is not to have any gaps between block and soil

The blocks are high density concrete 7nm

I would not recommend trench blocks or thermolite they don't have enough strength to them

Cheers for that. I’ve told him don’t use Trench blocks. Biggest advantage we have is it’s solid clay everywhere. There’s no way I’d have been able to dig it with a spade. Lol

You can dig solid clay with a spade... And a fork and a sledge hammer and a few other tools....
I know this because I've been doing it every night after work for the last 2 months.

Got 2 cubic metres out so far lol So my first big dig has started today.

Yer, me to, I dug mine out by hand, it wasn't too bad once I had an edge to work at then a few good swings of a mattock and it comes out nicely, I did have the advantage of blistering heat when I did mine which really heped

2 months to dig out 2 cubic meters

And people are saying I'm taking my time with my QT lol

When I dug my pond out about 8 years ago there was 6 bulk bags so that's 6 yards of soil that came out and me and a mate did it in a day and a half plus it was in the summer. OK it wasn't clay it was a mix of top soil then 1.5" ballast and once we got down past 3ft I needed a pair of steps to get out of the hole. It's not that I'm that short but after shifting that much soil I couldn't stand up straight enough to climb out.

Ah yes the good old Mattock also known as a Router or Rooter depending on who you speak to.

Brilliant for digging trenches for pipes and cables as the blade is just wide enough so the warning tape sits in the trench and doesn't get folded over so you are not digging out any more than you need to

Lock as in the things you find on canals?

Or lock as in padlock - used to smash one off (not to be confused with crack one off or snap one off)

The shape has been finalised due to the size of the concrete around the manhole and bottom drains installed again positions dictated by the drains. All good though. Not a vast amount was done last week I have to say except a couple of days concreting the base for the hot tub and the side part. That's one hell of a selfie stick you have there to get photo No. 5 LOL

Are you making the hole safe at the end of the day as you don't want some scum bag taking a header into it and trying to sue you - where's there's a blame there's a claim.

Looks like you are making good progress.

I’ve been telling the guy who’s supposed to be digging and building it about putting tape around it but it has fallen on deaf ears. Even offered to “borrow” some barrier tape from work but again no definitive answer. Last week was the first week I’ve been back at work whilst they’ve been working and it’s ground to a halt. Well feels like it as very little has been done. Nothings been done today as he has an emergency to deal with and then I’m back at work tomorrow so first I’m going to catch up with him is Thursday. Starting to get frustrated at the min. I gave up this morning and put the bottom drains in myself and then piled a load of pea gravel around them. I’ve been on with him about increasing the size of the filter pit but nothings happened. I even started that on Friday but then after 15 minutes I thought why am I doing this when I’m paying someone to do it.
A friend in the village keeps popping round with his drone and taking pics so I’ve got a few now from the beginning to last Wednesday.

Are there any plans drawn up for the pond and filter pit?

Unfortunately that doesn't always mean it will get done the way you want it to does it?

Have you had to pay the builder anything yet?

If you have keep a clear note of what's been paid and what's been done and as much photographic evidence as you can. Also if you have agreed to pay as the jobs are done then keeps the payment down as much as possible.
