Mark's new 10k ltr pond build diary
Following my previous post, I am starting my pond build diary in the correct location (by that I mean on the forum, not in garden !)
After keeping saltwater marine tanks for over 15 years and regular conversations with a lady from the Wirral who I dealt with in work and always talked about her Koi pond and often suggest I build one, in 2017 I finally set upon building one.
I had an old herbaceous border that had become overgrown and my wife decided it would be the perfect location as its on a bank with steps down one side and a patio area near by.
The idea is to have a semi sunken / semi raised pond cut into the bank which should provide a fantastic back drop with a rockery / waterfall and planting to overhang the edge.
Summer 2017
Plants removed, topsoil removed and excavations commence. Agreed with local farmer that waste can go in his field that backs onto the house so temporary ramp built over stream and waste barrowed into field.
Most of 2017 was spent digging and barrowing !!
The pond edge will be about 3ft above the path to the left with the pond depth approx 41/2 ft.
The far end where my wifes rhubarb plant is will be the filter housing, now to dig up the wife's rhurbarb, transplant and fingers crossed it survives.
SPRING 2018
Excavations completed and wall foundations dug out, shuttered and concreted.
Block work wall commenced using 215mm hollow blocks with 12mm reinforcing bars drilled into the concrete foundations.
110mm waste pipe installed to centre drain and brought through into filter housing ready for future EA Nexus 220 filter.

Mark's new 10k ltr pond build diary
Mark, i may be going mad here and missed something but why only 3 walls on the main pond? Guessing this will be linered if you are using the embankment as a wall? Where your walls end at the embankment how have you anchored them in? looks like a very weak point and a disaster waiting to happen in my opinion mate but like i say i cant quite pick up your build design/idea? If that bank ever gets any slip etc.. it might not end well. The filter house i can understand but the main pond i dont really get it. Theres going to be alot of weight and forces on them walls and i would hate to see this go terribly wrong.
On a positive note though it looks like its going to be a nice size, how deep is it? Any thing into the ground?

A good point made by Lee, might be worth putting in a pier at least or better yet digging back and putting block across the 4 side

Thanks for the concern guys, the idea of no wall on the rear of the pond was to try and get a more natural look with rock work on the water edge. As for stability, being in North Wales on the side of a small mountain the wall foundations are for most parts built on rock with extra reinforcing bars drilled into the rock so I’m quietly confident it won’t move !

Hi Mark, looking very nice and neat mate, well done...I am jealous of your filter housing, sadly just no room in my garden for one so going to have to come up with a solution to cover over my electrics, I think were going to use a composite product and probably just cover over the top, I think to box it all in will be painful and will look poor... unsure yet. Steve.

It will be linered, EDPM liner due to be delivered this week. The embankment has been there for over 40 years and never moved so fingers crossed !!
All the wall corners have extra reinforcing bars and concrete filled.
The depth by the bottom drain is 1450mm so just under 5 ft. The bottom of the pond is about 18" below the ground level so walls aren't too high for my wife to look over !!
The size was governed by the garden but I feel its ideal and I estimate about 10'000 litre volume.

well done Mark, as you say good progress mate, did you manage to get the liner down with no creases? will look very nice once all sorted, that bush will give you some surface grief lol, mine is right up sheltered by our house, no trees or bushes for around 30m away but pollen and debris on the surface just from air / wind blown particles is immense, glad i have a skimmer! cheers Steve.

Cheers Steve, liners got some creases, very hard not to get any !
Good point about the bushes, looks nice but will fill my pond with debris and stupidly I didn’t fit a skimmer.
Hope your ponds coming on well, did I see pictures of fish ?

Hi Mark,
yes a few fish 5 in total, hate to refer to them as pond fillers as we are attached to them already lol but they are in to help with bio, fingers crossed I can keep them healthy, water checks every day now, good luck to you is it too late to retro fit a skimmer ??
cheers Steve.
