Thread: Sleeper Pond Extension!

Sorry to hear this,
I'm no builder but if its moving forwards i would place something on the stable part to measure the amount of movement over a week. If its still moving i would obtain some scaffold poles and bang these in with a lump hammer to secure the movement temporarily. Pushing them down below the base depth of the pond. Hope that makes sense. Hopefully this will see the winter through and research all options and start in spring! Possibly speak to a subsidence firm to ask what they would advise or do.When I’m dead I hope my Mrs doesn’t sell my fishing gear for what I told her they cost!

Thanks all for the concern and suggestions.
A structural engineer at work suggested similar to BCC, he said possibly to cast a concrete bench along the width of the pond which would serve 2 purposes. Or I could consider bolting L shaped angle iron on the 2 corners that run along the width of the pond.
I like fi5hies idea, I could resin inject the cracks and then hammer some 1 metre long scaffold posts, that should stop it moving permanently I'd have thought. Not sure where I'd get the scaffold from though but going to have a look.
Bowsaw, I've been zooming in on various summer photos that have the pond in shot. Most recent photo was 13th August and there was a hairline crack on the right side of the pond (crack on left has been there months), so it's literally over the last month that it has grown and fully split apart. It's so big now it doesn't need monitoring equipment.... If I can get my finger in a little bit more then I'll know it's got worse.

Just a sugestion I would run a peice of heavy angle iron along the bottom of the concrete , then dig a good size hole for a foundation fill with concrete then install a bottle jack pushing from the foundation to the angle iron try to jack the concrete back into place, if that's successful then bury jack and everything in concrete it's amazing how much pressure you can achieve with a bottle jack a reasonable size one anyway, always at car boot sales ect for few quid

Scaffold poles, speak to a builder, scaffolder or online! I would find a local scaffold company as the size you want is really an actual width size and ask if they have any damaged or bent ones they don’t want or find a building site and speak to the builder

That's what I like about this site - normally we are all taking the piss out of each other but as soon as things like this happen everyone comes up with great advice and sympathy.

Christ just read this Rs feel for you mate.
Dont know what to suggest,as said scaffold all the way round the pond with angle iron on the corners would hold but wouldn't look nice, like wrapping up a box with corner strengheners.
I understand its pushing out the corner?
Dig down on both sides, thick rebar and a strong mix of concrete.
Drain down pond past the concrete ring first pull back liner to see internal damage, but I would go scaffold all round the pond at least it is secure and can be repaired in your own time mate.
Sorry to hear this,if I was near you I would give you a hand.John

Thanks all, and especially Frim for the kind offer, but hopefully I should be ok.
Didn't expect anyone to even see my post let alone get any responses.
Some really good suggestions that I'd not thought of so again, thank you all.
Just picked up 3 lengths of scaffold for a fiver.
Pond is 60cm below ground at this end (which doesn't sound much, but it bloody felt it when I was digging it) so these 60cm - 90cm lengths should suffice.
I've also bought resin injection which I'll squirt into the cracks until they're full.
Not been able to find anything to brace the concrete with but I do have a strong aluminium box section the same width as the pond that I could put between the scaffold poles and the concrete collar.
My thinking is as follows:
Attachment 29501
If it holds with no further movements over say, 6 Months, I may just leave as-is.
If there is any sign of further movement I will have to do a more permanent repair which I think would be the original plan; Cut out a section of collar while leaving the sleepers in situ (they can't be moved due to the amount of rebar through them), build some shuttering, then drill bolts into the remaining collar, add mesh etc and refill the vold with cement which should hopefully tie it into the existing collar.Last edited by RS2OOO; 19-09-2019 at 08:23 PM.

I will get me boys to have a look for you RS when their out on the building sites at night
They tell me they do Night work, But I have me suspicions. Got enough stuff here to build a house
including scaffold poles.
What a nightmare for you sure it will come good in the end though.

A builder has suggested I do this. My concern is that they are probably designed for walls with vertical forces rather than the pond which has outwards forces. Definitely looks like a neat and easy solution, but I'm not sure if it would work. Not cheap cheap either at £210 for the kit.

Hi RS 2OOO,
to be honest with with regards to the Helicix YouTube video I think your right it seems only for brick work although the do mention stonework which I think you can exclude concrete. If I can be of any assistance with anything if your going to get a group together then by all means give me a shout to lean a helping hand. To be honest if I were in your shoes I would get it done sooner rather than later. Could you drop your water level to just below the concrete collar?
to be honest if I were you I would replace the length of the collar. Thoughts anybodyLast edited by gravesendkoi; 19-09-2019 at 07:58 PM.

Looks good stuff Rs but dont think it's what you need.
As you say yours is outward pressure,is it on two sides of a corner?John
