    Reusing Steel barrels for pond

    Hi guys,

I’ve got some old steel barrels that were used for construction resin. Has anyone had any experience or have cleaned up old barrels/buckets in the past for use with koi?

    Regards

    Ken

Ya, I ended up throwing them away. Might use them as incinerator bins.

Went and purchased a couple of blue shipping barrels, to try make my own filter.

Found an aluminium storage barrel which I could use for a diy drum filter! I need to test it for rusting first.

    Kenny,

I wouldn't recommend using an aluminium barrel. Aluminium is acutely toxic to fish especially at lower values of pH. The gill is the principal target organ and death is due to a combination of ionoregulatory, osmoregulatory and respiratory dysfunction.

Translated into English; that means aluminium buggers up respiration and the other important gill
    functions.

You can get a food grade plastic barrel/keg of eBay with a clamp fit lid for reasonable money.
Depends on size, 120lt is about £30

Oh my, did not know that. So steel is out of the question and aluminium. Stainless steel drums are very expensive. I wonder what washing machine drums are made from.

Aye, I got a couple of these that are food grade. They are massive tho. Was planning to use them for a temporary barrel filter whilst I start work on trying to build a drum using some non deadly materials.
