Main assumption here is to create some kind of vortex. Collecting all the waste through the center of the pond. Hence all the BDs are placed in the center. Hope this will work well.

    Attachment 26120
It's an interesting idea but I honestly don't think the hydrological characteristics of BDs (clustered or not) will create a vortex effect. I could be wrong but my thinking is because BDs tend to have a cover and I think the type of pull would not result in that downward pull you see when you empty the bath for example. Hold a bath plug just above the plug hole when emptying the water and you'll see what I mean. It may well work perfectly fine? Just my thoughts. Either way I do like new ideas so why not try something different. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Angling the input flow/s will have a far greater effect on getting the water circulating than the
    Coriolis effect.
    6000g in ground koi pond
    +3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
    29 koi (40 to 65cm)

I have used same solution in my mini pool but on smaller scale and it works great. All the waste is constantly moving towards center. We will see how it works in koi pond.

1 x bottom drain and angled / directed returns would cause a vortex effect

Love your house and garden Slickbe and that is a hell of a hole.

I am a big fan of the vortex for removing solids as i use one in my grow on and i will be very interested in seeing the finish.
I can see what you mean but as mentioned above its getting rid of the poo quickly, would it be better to leave off the bottom drain covers and use a s/s grid that way the muck would go better as it would be slopping towards the drains, just a thought.

Thx john1! Hope to finish re-building my garden with new koi pond and clean all this mess before end of next year. But still soo much work ahead.

I will definitely try two options, with and without BD caps + s/s grid. Will see which one is better in this BDs placement. One thing might be problematic. I have got a lot of trees aroud - lot of leaves. In option two, no caps and only s/s mesh - leaves could have problem to get through. But we will see.

Noticed you had a lot of leaves and yes you may get a problem with them, skimmers will take a few but not all so maybe as you say trial and error, will be a bit cold to be changing from drain top to s/s.

Do you have a swiming pool? I would be quite tempted if I had that, to include a set of steps down so I could take a swim with the koi on a hot sunny day - I have been swimming with mine on a few occasions when doing a bit of maintenance - its great fun - they look huge when you are in there with them.

Yes, mini swimming pool, 3x3x1,2m. But I am also going o install platform and ladder over new koi pond. To swim with kois

Here are some photos of my old style pond. 1m deep, no skimmers, no BDs. There was no way to keep water clean.

i like to see new ideas. like all your bottom drains in one area. i will be following this build. to see if your idea works out.
looking good so far. keep the photo s rolling.
and is that your green house in the back ground. thats some size green house.

It is a bold move positioning the drains as they havebeen. Personally not how I would havedone things.

Airlift returns are a great idea but would suggest sometesting to see how they would cope with the differential water levels you getin a drum set up. (pre clean and post clean) . I think you might find that the circa 1” difference in levels could have a significant impact on the amount of water that canbe lifted.

I must admit I hadn't spotted that the OP was planning on using airlifts to return the water. Not sure how well that will work in forming a vortex - three or four high pressure angled 2" jets yes - airlifts … I am a bit dubious. Might it be worth while incorporating 2" pipe runs just in case.. They would be an absolute pig to retro fit once the concrete is poured into those walls and its all backfilled!

There will be adidtional 3-4 63mm angled (45 degrees) returns for pumps (20 m3/h). They will be powered up for a few hours a day to create vortex. With or without airlifts in the same time. I will have to test all the combinations. I have mentioned this in first post

That's good - I have just drilled a 2 hole through the brickwork on my pond - trying to do that through the reinforced concrete of your pond would be a nightmare. My suspicion is that you will need at least some of the pumps going all the time - As Dave mentioned there can be quite a drop between pond to drum to clean side - particularly with a big drum.

my pond is round, its 5500 gallons with one b.d in the middle and a flat floor, it works really well you can see poop at the outer edges working its way towards the centre, and I can make it work 2 ways. 1st way is angled returns through the wall, even a small water return input like this gets the whole pond going around like a big vortex, or secondly with all water returning over the shower, I can get the same poop cleaning up efficiency just using the air from the b.d, and this I feel is kinder on the fish because they aren't living in a huge vortex with no place to rest up if they want too.
One problem you might encounter on a round pond is, when you have a circular flow like a big vortex the air from your bottom drain doesnt rise nice and gentle in millions of nice tiny bubbles, what happens is because the water in your pond is spinning, even if only slightly, it causes your rising column of air from your b.d to spin like an underwater twister, and you get no nice bubbles, you just get a twisting column of air from the b.d right to the surface, and you get next to no aeration from it, and the whole process just accelerates your pond spinning like a vortex even faster.....been through all this myself.! which is why I no longer use my angled returns but I rely instead on my aerated b.d to do the cleaning up.

That's a nice size pond! Be interested to see how this all comes out, air lifts, bottom drain placement and all. Personally I don't think the multiple drains in the middle is going to be a problem, but we shall see. I think it's typical for everything to be symmetrical, but that's not to say it won't work.

Keep the updates and pictures rolling and best of luck.

Thx guys for all advices and experiences! Definitely there will be many options to test when it is done.

Todays status: concrete in 2 layers of blocks. 6 layers and concrete crown at the top to finish.

For drilling holes up to 110mm I am going to use this kind of drill machine:

    wiertnica.jpg

I have used this during building my pool. 50mm holes done without any problems. Very important thing is to connect tap water. It takes out all of the dust and saves diamond cutting layer.
