    New KOIPOND 90 m3

    Hi everyone!

I have started building big koi pond. It will be in octagon shape.

    Main informations:
    - cpacity about 90m3
    - height about 2,3m maybe a little more (I know that it is deep, but too much soil was excavated)
    - all structure made of concrete and foundation bricks
    - EPDM liner
    - 4 bottom drains (one aerated)
    - 4 standard wall skimmers
    - 3-4m3 moving bed with media
    - 65m3 drum filter / 8x inlets / 7x outlets to bio chamber (drum similar to QUENI KOI QK65)
    - return to pond: 6x 110 airlifts
    - additional / backup return to pond: 2-3 pumps (20m3/h), runnig on 63/75mm pipes (they will be power on when there is a need, probably 2 hours a day to make flow a little better and clean the pipes)

    Top view:

    While and after excavating:

Pls tell me what do you think about this project. Any suggestions? Any changes to make? Thx

thats going to be stunning, personally i wouldnt go so deep, a lot of people think it contributes to swim bladder issues.
Think id space the bottom drains out more than the drawing suggests...and Id think about heating and how it could be done on such a big outdoor scale

That's one big puddle. I am sure you have factored in capital and maintenance costs. Just bear in mind costs for medications etc on that sort of volume. Two treatments for flukes costs me c. £90 for 22,000 litres. It all adds up as the pond size increases.

I hope the build goes well. Looks like sand your digging in? Keep the photos coming.

    Thanks for sharing.
    Ian.

Looks more like an open quarry than a pond dig

I do agree on the depth- you could run into problems down the line with koi when they get big.
Thats going to be one heck of a liner when you get it!

    Which country are you in?

I would consider bringing up the level a bit - Adding insulation placing pipework/bottom drains on top and backfilling before laying your base would use up a bit - anything more than 2m is a waste and possibly damaging to the fish. I would consider using at least 2 drums - say QK 50's - if one goes down you have some redundancy.
    6000g in ground koi pond
    +3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
    29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

    Thx for all replies!

Regarding to the depth (after some more measurements) - it will be about 2m in the center of the pond.. It all depends on the height of the wall I want to build above grass level. If the wall will be 10-15 cm above soil level, depth will be around 2m. Depth next to the walls will be 1,7-1,6m slopping straight to the center.

About drum filter, I am thinking also about 100m3 capacity to have some reserve. In case of having just 65m3 I would probobaly run it on 100% flow all the time. Maybe 100m3 will be a better solution? I do not want to have two drums. Prefer one bigger. My drum chamber dimensions are limited and will probably not acomodate two drums.

Form yours experience, how much flow could I possibly get from 4 bottom drains and 4 wall skimmers?

Now I am working on correct slopping to the center of the pond. Soil is all sand. Hopefully it is staying on its place, zero slips

    I am from Poland.

I reckon about 12k ltrs per 4" drain from pond without having too big a loss of head. So you are good for around 100m3/hr flow.

All 4 BDs already placed and leveled. There is a little slopping on pipes towards filter chamber. Hope that no air will stuck there.

Next after covering pipes will be final leveling of bottom (hope to get 12-15% towards center of the pond) and preparing for concrete.

sloped bottoms really dont do anything, you would be far better off spacing your bottom drains out, as they are, they are all pulling from the same space, id space them out so they keep all of the floor clean, or at least much more of the floor clean.
Also if they are aerated its going to look like a volcano when you turn them on, far better spaced out

Thought an asteroid had hit your garden when I first looked!

If the deepest part is 2m I think that should be ok. I think most people go around 5ft so its only 12" more and only at the deepest point.

My pond is only sloped around 2" from the side to the centre, you couldn't tell by looking, and even with this very slight slope I see the waste gradually roll towards the bottom drain. I personally don't see any great harm with the slope you have though.

They are all in the center, because of te bottom profile. Pls see my first post, SIDE VIEW. As RS2000 said all the waste will roll down straight to the one of BDs. Especially when water will flow into one direction, around the pond. If I had a flat bottom I would place BDs spreaded around. But I think this is better configuration with all them in the center and sloped bottom. I have exact solution in my swimming pool and it works great with one BD in the center.

I have a single BD in a 6000g pond with sloped sides - never have an issue with muck on the bottom. I am in the process of adding an additional mid water drain as I find that the one BD & single skimmer cant cope with the flow though.

Measuring slope level according to BD placement. Finally it will be just about 12,5% slopping torwards center. I thing this will be more than enough to collect all the poops

And this shows how much soil I have to add to gain 12,5% slope.

Here is my second mini pond for small fishes, frogs, newts and all kind of pond and swamp plants. This was started 6 months ago. Just have to wait till plants will take over the place.

I've never seen anyone install a cluster of BDs all in the same place before!

What I would be concerned with is the sand you've filled around those drains is not compacted (on your pics). Once the concrete is poured and the pond is filled there will be immense weight over those things so if anything is not fully compacted there will be problems.

Day before concrete. Almost everything ready.

    20181026_165036.jpg

Main assumption here is to create some kind of vortex. Collecting all the waste through the center of the pond. Hence all the BDs are placed in the center. Hope this will work well.

18m3 of concerte came out. Average thickness of base is 28cm. It was supossed to be 30cm, but there was not enough concrete. Tomorrow adjustemnts.

That is an enormous thickness of reinforced concrete. I will be fascinated to see how this turns out. Th vortex concept with all bottom drains in a small central area does not seem conducive to a good Koi viewing environment to me - too much water disturbance - but with concrete poured it is too late now.

I think in your shoes I would have been inclined to put timber or steel shuttered formwork around the pound, with rebar, and pump fibre reinforced concrete around the walls too.

Great to watch the work in progress, so thanks for taking the trouble.
