    Filters v clarity

Having had my pond up and running for approx 6months now I’m looking for your opinions, I’ve been running an anoxic filtration system and the parameters have been fine with the water,, but with the sunshine we’ve had this year it’s been a pain in the backside to try and keep it clean,, I’m not doing it again next year just takes up to much of my time, so some plain advice please on what set up I need to 1. Keep maintenance to a minimum, 2.crystal clear waters 3 happy fish !
It’s 7500 gallons two bottom drains feeding anoxic filter via two aqua variable pumps turning water over once an hour when on full ,,, I’m thinking nexus 300? But this is new to me,, I will be removing the anoxic filter over winter and this area will be used for new filtration system,, fire away please looking forward to your answers and similar set ups Filters v clarity TIA

What filtration have you got before the anoxic?

From what I've read about an anoxic filter system is they are designed to remove chemicals like Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate etc. but need a pre filter to stop the muck getting into them. Even with a pre filter they will require maintenance occasionally.

Thanks very, before the anoxic I have settlement chamber and brushes and fine mesh, before they enter anoxic the clarity is fairly good ,, but fines are not removed so I’m looking for gin clear water with little maintenance compared to now

Depends what sort of money you want to spend at the end of the day but a few on here are going drum and bio chamber and say they have really good results with little if any regular maintenance. I think drums start at about £1000 and then there's the bio chamber on top of that.

So is this Draco or similar into nexus 320 ? Is that the sort of configuration? So new that would be around £2k I could go to that over winter, as although expensive I don’t want to spend next years summer nights clearing fish ponds 😬😁

I've been using "old technology" for thirty years. Open cell foam and Flowcore but a lot of it. I also have a pump sump. Foam is brilliant stuff, the more it gets clogged the better it works. The sump gets purged to waste, (draining down with a standpipe in the socket at the bottom) once a week. A five minute job. The foam gets a scrape with a wet n' dry vac. every two years.

The sump prevents coarse solids even reaching the filter.

And the water is this clear on its return.

My water parameters are that boringly consistently acceptable, I rarely bother to check them.

I've never had green water. I've been using a 36w UV for a few years now, for my 2,500 gall pool. But I was still getting clear water when I was using a home made one thirty years ago, a quartz glass tube, a germicidal fluorescent, a bit of key terrain pipe, some plumbing fittings and a recycled kitchen light fitting.

I'm amazed at how much maintenance some modern filters require.

7500g is a big pond - I doubt you will get a drum + bio system big enough for £2000. Putting a decent sized drum (or 2x small ones) in prior to the existing anoxic might solve your problem though and keep within budget.

    6000g in ground koi pond
    +3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
    29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

For that size pond you will have crystal clear water and very low maintenance with a Profidrum combo 50 - Call Darre at Absolute Koi for great advice. It will cost more that you budgeted for, but int he long run....

Over budget and there is some evidence that systems like that tend to get issues with nitrite - fitting a shower is often considered the solution - but that's yet more expense. If the Anoxic is doing the business biologically than why ditch it.

The anoxic is doing what it’s supposed to do te nitrates etc, but the water is murky and can’t see the fish, over summer had so much blanket weed it blocked the 4” bottom drains x2

Thank you for your comments and advice I see from your video lots of ‘roof’ tanks but not sure I follow on your set up? Very interested in this design also any information would be greatly received Doggouse

The clarity issue would be fixed by the drum, provided you have sufficient UV. To be honest I have come to the conclusion that blanket weed is best stamped on chemically before it gets a hold - I use CBA at half dose - its the only chemical I use on the pond.

Why not keep the anoxic filter but put a drum filter in front of it?

You should then get crystal clear water and almost zero maintenance.

    Richard17,

My pond (20,000 litres) is run with an AEM Easydrum RDF and Anoxic in a sump (OK it is a 2000 litre bio chamber). I also run anoxic in a planted area of the pond, so there was probably more anoxic than initially required. However time spent on maintenance is negligible compared to my previous filter incarnations, and my water is clearer than ever.

In my head I have already planned a 10,000 litre pond extension which would have another AEM Easy drum from a separate bottom drain and a separate anoxic chamber (around 1,000 litres).

    Kenny

I can say that my 54,000 litre pond has stocking levels of 150 fish and absolute perfect water quality all year round, just using the ProfiDrum Combi 50 unit. It makes having a large pond and many fish enjoyable, not hard work!

Thanks everyone for all the input couple of mentions on AEM drums but can’t find anything on these? Is that the correct name?

CBA I’ve tried at full dose but it hasn’t killed of blanket weed,,
