Today’s the day...
Today is the day I break ground, pooing myself a little bit even though I have been preparing for this day for the last year! We only moved in to this house 2 months ago and it has been full on with decorating, flooring and all sorts of problems but I hope I haven’t miss calculated anything.
the whole garden is going to be re arranged but on the right side by the patio area I am going for a 3.18m x 2.28m x 1.8m pond dense blocks laid on their side internals covered with celotex and fibreglassed with 2x aerated bottom drains, 1 in wall skimmer and an infinity window 1800 by 600. Budget has been shortened by sorting out the interior of the house but in time it will be filtered by an AEM drum to JBR bio chamber returning over either 1 or 2 JBR showers. The skimmer will be returned through 2 2” mid level returns.
just waiting on the digger arriving

looks really good but i cant figure out where the pond is going..............lol sorry couldn't resist!!! id be tempted to add another few feet to that especially if you going drum and maybe 2 showers.. you'll have enough filtration for it. and it will stop you having to spend more money on part 2/3 later on. and once those lines go the missus will never know

Thanks Craig
didnt think of that liam! Last night I shortened it slightly as the Mrs exact words were ‘tell me that isn’t the size you are planning for the pond...’ but now she will be none the wiser!!

Well good progress made today I think, run out of space on the boards so the grab truck is coming first thing and we can dig out the second half. Garden stripped and bushes ripped up so hopefully only a half day tomorrow to finish the dig, grade the grass and move the Wendy House to the other corner. Made a bit of a mistake only realising after half the dig that I forgot to dig out a section for the pipes to come up out of the ground, doh! Will sort it tomorrow

What could possibly go wrong? Trying to get slab in if not this week then next not sure if I need ballast 1.5T struggled to get through the thick clay, plan to have the brickwork finished for the tail end of next week. I am aware that in writing this in black and white the likelihood is that it will still be a hole in the ground come Christmas...
Does anyone know the lead time on a window from tuffix?
Cheers
Scott

Hang around for too long and they will be putting me in a hole that shape, cheers Craig probably order it just before the brick work is finished giving me time to get it glassed and everything prepared.

More hole means more money to fill it tho, the Mrs said if I’m getting my pond she wants a hot tub, I said well the bottom drains will give you the bubbles so if I your saying I can buy an ASHP it’ll be lovely and warm for you . People pay to swim with tropical fish on coral reefs, what’s wrong with koi in berkshire??!!
only half the hole dug out yet big carp boys turned up half an hour ago and cleared the boards so it’s back to narrowing now!

Does anyone know where I can get some solvent weld sharpish?! The stuff in the likes of wickes says non pressure on the tub which has me worried and the quickest I can get WDF-05 is Tuesday???!!!

Plumbers merchants, there’s one in Blackwater next to Aldi, not actually sure it makes much difference as people use all sorts of solvent weld adhesive. Your pipes aren’t under any pressure...some of the adhesives give you a bit more time to work with the larger diameter pipes.
Weldon, Tangit and Floplast all used I believe.

It’s minimal. It’s an open ended system.
The water is just circulating round with no restrictions. If you had some kind of big tank you were filling that was sealed then it would be under pressure but it’s not. The type of grey pressure pipework we use on ponds is usually for chilled water cooling aircon systems, you could use any old 2” solvent weld pipe and it would be fine.
The argument for using pressure pipe underground has its merits however you don’t NEED to use it. Plenty of people have used normal soil/drainage pipe but you do get that peace of mind with pressure pipe. It’s also a bit more affordable these days. Class C for example is quite noticeably thinner walled than class E but it’s never gonna burst. Your joints are the weakest point.
Oh yea, pressure pipe fits all the commonly available better valves, the other ones are a bit cack.
Can be a pin getting hold of PP fittings but WOW in Shindfield have a reasonable selection albeit a little more expensive than online but only like a quid more. You can never have too many elbows

Yea was down the bracknell WOW last week expecting to get my wallet emptied for a few rubber connectors but turned out to pretty well priced for once, they even solvent welded a few bits together for me which was handy! Yea fair enough I do think these ponds are over engineered but you never want to take the risk

When a customer comes to me and says ‘can you sort out my Engine for me?’ I say ‘yes certainly I will have a look, assess the situation and consult with the engineers to find a solution and if your happy I’ll rectify the problem’...
So why is it that when I ask my builder ‘can you sort me out 2m3 for my slab’ he says ‘shouldn’t be a problem, I’ll get a guy to come round with the lorry and he might even help you wheel barrow it around if he’s in a good mood, sorted mate’
I’ve already had to help wheel barrow all the spoil around the front because one of them was off sick
