Since draining below the suspected area the water has dropped a total of 15mm in 3 days, does this sound like evaporation?

hhmm...I've had about 6" of water in the bottom of my pond for a week and it hasn't budged a bit, I wouldn't have thought you'd get much by the way of evaporation in this weather Scott

Well next plan is to dig up the upright bottom drain pipes and see if anything is coming out of there, if not then I will have to live with it

Is it worth a little trial hole at side of the pond where you stepped in and heard the “crack”?
If the soil at the base is soaked that might shine some light?
I’d maybe be tempted to take 6” out at a time over the course of the week. Don’t rush it mate, you’ll get it sorted.

Also, if you have a continuous leak that will probably get worse over time maybe even compromise the integrity of your pond totally. Better to fix it now with a bit of aggro than a few years down the line with loads of aggro

The rate at which im losing water is slowing down at the moment I’m going to see if it stops over the course of the next week it might be a defect around where the return comes through the wall actually. The side where I head the crack has been concreted up mate, no chance of getting down there I’m relatively convinced it’s not the fibreglass, as for a re-build the budget is blown now so there is no chance . It will be fine mate

Sadly I wouldn’t say so. I agree with Big Carp. My puddle has a nice green water line around it at top level and over the last 2 weeks while I’ve been away it hasn’t changed in depth at all.
5mm a day defo seems like a tiny / seeping leak.
I had a similar pace leak on mine on the filter side and I stripped it all out, sealed it all back up and then replumbed it. It was a right pain in the ass to do but worth the short term hassle for the long term gain.

You can use a syringe full of dye that you can put in the water to identify the position of a leak e.g. round the returns - (or are they completely out of the water now?)
You can get special dye on line from swimming pool suppliers or improvise using food dye. We used it to locate a leak in a pool. It turned out to be a bottom drain pressure valve not closing properly - you could see the dye being drawn in towards the bottom drain. Injecting it near the bottom drain without stirring the water required a bit of Heath Robinson type engineering though.6000g in ground koi pond
+3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

years ago on old pond i had a leak and took me ages to find, pond was half in half out and water was dropping halfway then stopping, couldnt figure it out as i looked everywhere, then i drained pond and found a stone had come through liner right in a corner, just enough to let water out and as on clay soil it was stopping at ground level due to gravity evening things out lol,i had to replace a weeping bd 4" ball valve yesterday that got worse the more i tightened the unions and pond is half full, now that was fun hahaha,my window sorted bud, stripped it down and used ct1,this is my new goto sealant lol, andi

Just drained down below the returns and photographed around the return elbows and found this next to the elbow, looks like a hole in the fibreglass...

From the look of the size, hard to tell from a pic, but it would seem that some sealant would solve that.
Or you could do what I did on one pipe join and buy a short bit of silicone hose, slice it length ways to make a flat patch and then put sealant on the holes, patch over the top and seal the edges of the silicone hose.
3 months later the little fix I did is till going strong.
For you it might not look pretty for a few weeks as it’s in the pond but once the walls, etc green up then so will the patch and you’ll never see it.
Or get your fibreglasser back to fix it as it’s probably a glassing error.

Nice one scott. Nice spot. Agree with gray. Sealent and rubber patch
Or bring the glasser back.
At least now you know where it is leaking.
Good luck mate.

Try it mate. If it dont work. Pull it off. And try something else lol
You got nothing to lose. I put some sealnt on my tank fiber glass. and it worked admittedly it was not a joint.
Just flat surface
I also put some flow coat on top of that.

Not an expert but have done a little glassing, looks like the matting wasnt saturated enough showing the dots, the hole i would lightly sand and fill with pu18 and let it dry for 24hrs,great stuff.
