Just had a tapa talk notification for another thread that reminded me I haven't put any updates up for a while.

A few weeks ago we lost one of the original four koi (Mbappe the Ochiba) to a heron. All caught on cctv... depressing viewing. It also had a go at the Soragoi (Christian Grey) and left him with a wound on his head, which has healed into a manly scar.

So... I've added fishing line around all the edges and threaded a CD onto the section on the anoxic wall. I check the footage daily and other than one day when my wife spotted the heron on a neighbour's roof it hasn't yet returned to the pond...

We've added four more koi since then... Fitzgerald, Alun Wyn (Jones...my wife's sporting crush) , Timothy and Phish, so up to seven... feeding well and without wishing to tempt fate they all seem happy. If the Heron returns I think Fitz will be first in line... he's bright yellow and positively luminescent.

For a couple of reasons (my crap rendering being one) I decided to clad one of the walls with timber... I've used some decking boards for the time being. As yet unstained but in the summer will probably remove them and finish with an Osmo stain... possibly walnut. Might switch to a different kind of timber too, purely for aesthetics.

Finally connected up the waterfall. The Filtreau drum is working well and the two no-niche skimmers keep the surface perfectly clear. The aerated drains are on a timer so they turn off for an hour twice a day... We get to see the fish and it gives the skimmers the chance to clear the surface debris that the air otherwise pushes to the wall on the opposite side of the pond.

The water is lovely and clear. The pond levels all seem good. Nh3 has crept up a little since I re-started feeding (only with wheatgerm food) and introduced the new fish, but has settled down now.

Had a problem with blanket weed, originating from the anoxic pond, but dosed with cloverleaf and it's much better. Got some bunches of barley in the anoxic now which will hopefully deter its return.

Put a layer of floating baskets in the anoxic too, so there are now around 35 baskets in total. Hopefully more than enough for seven koi and a handful of smaller fish. The floating ones are currently planted with a bit of creeping jenny and some other plant I can't recall...
