That first row took me ages, checking, leveling, lining up and checking again, took me an absolute age just to setup the corners, but that is the hardest part of it, once you have the corners set and the first row started it easy going from there, so I wouldn't be too disappointed, it takes time to do it right

7th August 2018
Only 14 blocks laid tonight but then I was rained off, it started around 8pm so luckily was at the end of a mix. I'm off next week so hoping to get more progress, although weather permitting as there are a few changeable days forecast at the moment.
I'll get a picture of progress tonight as otherwise this will look like a slow motion build.
Need to order some 2" pressure pipe ready for adding the returns as I build up too. On my last pond which has a liner I cut them into the block so they were flush but I guess I don't need to worry about that with fibreglass? Do I just leave them sitting on the face of the block?

Rained off! - I haven't heard that saying for a long time
I left mine sticking out so the fiberglasser could cut them off, it will also allow you to install insulation if you decide before you fiberglass.
Sand down the outer part of the pipe when you install it to give a good key and leave a recess around the pipe so that have to fill it and that gives extra grip on the pipe also sand paper inside the pipe about 2" to give a good key, they should do it themselves but just to be sure, hove a look on my build to see how my returns were done, it may give you some ideas4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass

7th August to 9th August
Doesn't look much, 50 blocks laid in the last 3 evenings. I certainly won't put any builders out of business but then again we all have our forte! It's raining here today so no chance tonight. The real work starts Friday night as I'm off work for a week.

Any idea how to mount these pond returns from JBR? I went with the face-plate option to give a bit more strength / less risk of movement.
s-l1600.jpg
I'm going to fibreglass the pond so do I mount them:
- flush with the wall i.e. recessed slightly.
- flat against the wall
- protruding from the wall the thickness of the insulation?
I'm guessing not option 3 as it seems to defeat the object of extra strength?

If it was me I would put them against the insulation, so they are mounted on the surface, put plenty of glue behind the insulation, I used over a tube of PinkGrip on each panel, then glue the return to the insulation, its not so much strength you need but more area for the fiberglass to stick to
Dependent on what the front face is like can you stick any pipe out the front? I was thinking maybe fix it to the wall and then extend the pipe out to the insulation but that wouldn't help in the gluing area4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass

Sorry for the lack of posts last week, I was busy being a bricky. Forgot to take a few photos on various days, now suffering with a mixture of white finger and brick layers elbow, shoulder and hand! You'd never guess I was more used to tapping keys all day...

Sorry, forgot to take photos the last couple of days. I was rained off one day but otherwise it was too dark and then I forgot in the morning!

About 120 blocks to go, so 2 more rows on top of the highest point.
Slightly concerned how I winterise this as there's already 1/2" of water in the bottom from the rain, any ideas?

Lee,
When I did mine intermittent rain started to fill it. I just pumped it out by sitting a pump in the bottom drain every now and again. When it came time to paint it though I bought a bloody great big (8 metre) tarpaulin for next to nothing online. Held it in place with stretchy ties connected to vine eyes in a wall on one side stretched over the pond with a bunch of bricks holding it down on the top of the (by that time ) built wall.

Same here. Kept a cheap sump pump in my bottom drain. All the time. And bought a cheap marquee to go over the top for glassing.
Tarps just as good.

Thanks, I'll look into that... I was considering a cheap sump pump but wondering whether I was better to get cheap plastic for a makeshift liner or a tarp. The only thing that worries me about a tarp is stopping it blowing away or sagging with water. I'll look into it!

25th to 31st August
Approx 475 blocks now laid and complete! Well, at least for the pond... I still have brickwork to do around the edge and blockwork for the filter housing. Next job is concrete the base for the filters and work out which waterfall style to go with and plumbing. I wanted to get to this stage before the end of October so anything else now is a bonus.
It measures 5.6m long, 3.5m wide at the widest point and 2m at the thinnest and 1.6m deep.

11th September
Base for the filtration area is now in. Block laying to start soon, the only issue is the next couple of weekends are booked and nights are pulling in but at least the blocks are lighter and being laid upright so should go up fairly quickly.
Measured the internal walls of the pond up just to get a quote for the materials for fibreglassing. I think this will be around 19,800litres / 4,300 gallons.

I've only just been able to return my focus to the pond build, I've had a couple of other building projects on the go and it seems a lifetime ago that I started, in fact it was pretty much this time last year when we had the heat wave (what's that)... when I started digging.
I haven't done much between September and the last month but the updates are:
- emptied the pond from all the water from the winter, around 6 inches in the bottom, had it nice and dry then it rained last week and it's got about 2.5 inches in it again...
- bricked the wall around the edge.
- bought a s/h stainless steel shower off ebay, plus some genuine BHM from this site.
- bought the ProfiDrum in the end, the 55/40.
- Skimmer fitted.
- Most of the pipework is done into the drum. A few issues with space as I only have limited room for everything which has caused problems.
20190617_204151.jpg20190617_204158.jpg20190617_204210.jpg
Now I'm waiting for prices from JBR for a moving bed section to go behind the drum, another quote for a window and some sunshine to dry it all out so I can think about fibreglassing it but given the lead time on a few bits it's going to be 5-6 weeks before I can think about getting water in it. I'm now starting to wonder whether it's worth switching it on this year! (never thought I'd say that).
Just wondering if it's worth lining the pond with insulation, not that I plan to heat it at the moment but there is always a possibility but I was thinking more from giving it a smooth finish and rounding the corners off a bit..?

24th June
The lid for the filter section is underway.

Slight annoyance with the pond window. Turns out my wife & I had different ideas how it would look. So, not only will it cost more now but the window and frame lead time is 5 weeks. What with weddings, school holidays etc. I can't see me getting this fibreglassed until mid-August at the earliest now, weather permitting so I'm cracking on with the smaller jobs.
