Thread: Building a Second Pond

have you fixed the returns in place yet ?
i ask as i would use some 12mm insulation board to line the pond before fibreglassing and these returns would then sit slightly proud of the insulation , and then cut the insulation at 45 degrees to the return plate.
which means you would fibreglass to the side of the plates and then ideal seal around each one.

Hi, the returns are fixed now, I wasn't sure if I was going to insulate or not at the time of build so put them flush. I'm still on the fence with insulation as 80% of the pond is below ground and I'm not sure if I will heat in the future. The only thing that is tempting me other than future proofing is being able to fillet the corners and possibly a smoother finish? Would 12mm insulation be OK?

12mm celotex is fine ,
the fibreglass sticks like s*it to a blanket on it to be honest, I've done roofs and vans and was concerned the glass would sag as the resin dissolved as such the chopped strand matting but it didn't sag at all.

3rd & 4th August
I've missed a couple of updates. Managed to get the waterfall in place, shower installed, 90% of plumbing done and the window fitted. I need to cut the top section out of the frame to make it an infinity window though. However, this weekend we finally got it fibreglassed... I thought the day would never come as we were waiting for a dry spell, the pond to be dried out and 3 of us to be available on the same weekend.
Next jobs will be tiling the waterfall wall and slabs on top so there is a chance water will be in it this month!
Sorry the pictures are the wrong way up!

Doesn't fibreglass. Always look awesome once the gel coat goes on!

August 2019
I started digging 14 months ago and am now at the point I can put water in it and call it a pond!Still some work to with the plumbing and the pump won't arrivefor another 10 days.
I can't work out the orientation of these pictures so at the moment it looks like the water will fall out!

Filled up the pond Friday night, well it took 27 hours to fill. Woke up Sunday morning to find there is a leak as I'd lost 1cm overnight, seem to have lost a total of of 2cm or so in the last 36 hours.
I've checked the pipework and can't see anything but found a very wet spot on the back of the blocks so it looks like it's leaked through the fibreglass on a section on one side at least. Trouble is I can't see the majority of the other walls as I built a brick wall up in front of it so in hindsight I'd of left the slabs and brick wall until after the fill...
A little p***ed off to say the least... Guess I need to drain it and work out if I've got any obvious pin holes unless anyone has any other suggesstions.

Spoke to Bigcarpchaser and my local fibre glass company both of which were really helpful and said the same thing...
Sounds like the only option is to drain the pond, sand it back with a flap disc, apply a layer of surface tissue and re-top coat. I need to work out whether I deal with it in patches or just do the whole effing lot but suspect the latter.
Now I just need to find a couple of spare days, some dry weather and the motivation!

I've been waiting for a pump to arrive, typically I picked a pump that was out of stock to save £50 but it should be in tomorrow / Monday to Costal but it's given me chance to watch the water level.
Oddly, I seem to have lost about 2.5cm in the first 24 hours, around 1.5cm the next 24 hours and 1cm over the 48 hours after that i.e. 5 cm in total / 2 inches but it seems to be slowing down. The water level started just over the top slot on a JBR skimmer and is now just under the second.
I'll continue to monitor for a few more days as I can't pump it out anyway but it's got me scratching my head as there is definitely one patch that is wet above the soil level.

The leak will always be above the wet patch. Just drain it down to there and you'll know where the leak is when it stops leaking and water keeps at the same level. It is most likely just a pin hole in the flowcoat if its leaking that slowly, so if the rest of the pond is sound I would sand and re coat that area. Probably just flowcoat but with a strip of tissue or CSM wouldn't hurt.

Hi, I've been working on some plumbing and setting up the filters whilst I've got some water in it plus waiting for my pump to come into stock so I can drain...
Anyway, drained the pond yesterday but it didn't finish until about 10pm so hoping to jump in there tonight and see if there's anything obvious.
