Fred, unfortunately people need to make a living and cover their overheads, if they work for themselves they have to cover days off when they are ill or on holiday and depending on what they do may have to cover days that they can't work due to the weather conditions. So basically they have to try to make a year's money in 6 to 8 months. When you work for a company on the books they have to deal with all that for you and charge accordingly. The rule of thumb for certain trades is you charge someone out at the hourly rate you are paying them plus 125%. With certain trades you are paying for their knowledge and experience etc. as you don't want some handyman that's a Jack of all trades and a master of none working on your property and then you have to get a professional in to put right what they have messed up and pay twice for the same job do you?

Also it depends on how they charge as if they work on an hourly rate that will be more than a day rate divided by 8 or 9 hours and also a lot of people not including myself charge a full day for working 5 or 6 hours as they say that they can't fit in another job on that day which makes sense when you think about it really.

Nice one frim. When you break it down. Like that. It makes a lot of sense. At the time. My pond was done in a day. And i thought it was steep. For a days work.
Now you have broke it down. From a self employed point of view. I suppose now it was not.
Also looking at matts video. You can see he is a professional in his trade.

    Thanks Fred much appreciated.

There is a fine line between a quality job and a rip off and it's all in the details that most of the time the customer does have any idea about. Same applies to the any quote really as not everyone has the same lifestyle and overheads do they.

Sorry that should have been - the customer doesn't have any idea about - posted on my phone bloody predictive text.

To those of you discussing fibreglassing quotes here:

I've said this on another thread and will say it again here- if you obtain quotes for work and decide to go with the cheapest option that is totally and utterly up to you.

But you should bear in mind that other people will be making a decision on who they get in based on other criteria. Just because someone else has chosen one of the top professionals in the country to glass their pond and was prepared to pay for that does not make it a 'rip off', or that person somehow stupid for having done that. They just had different criteria for their decision making process, and also possibly had more money in the coffers in the first place

I'm pleased to see Matt has done a cracking job on this pond, as he did on mine and also recently on DaveJ's. We are not the only long term forumites to have chosen him.

I hope you are not thinking I'm saying he's ripping people off. I'm not saying that at all, all I'm trying to say is people jump on things when they see certain prices without knowing all the ins and outs of things. Basically it's like anything, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay at the end of the day, isn't it. Just because someone give you a price, a quote or an estimate etc. doesn't mean you have to accept it does it?

As for Matt, I've never met him or spoken to him so don't have any idea what he is really like. In the video he comes over as a person that obviously knows what he's doing and is good at what he does but does like to say it as it is. Some like that, some don't but at the end of the day he's a businessman and not out to make friends with his customers is he? Up until recently I've only read a few things about him on here but he did PM me recently because I was asking on this thread how much Adam paid for his pond to be done by him. I was only asking purely out of interest as with most pond builds or filter purchases etc. people openly put prices up. I did reply to Matt's PM but it was a bit of a long one so he's probably still reading it. Maybe he'll reply maybe he won't.

    Thanks for clarifying that Frim.

I am perhaps unusual in that I do consider a lot of the people I have done business with as friends, particularly if I have spent time and socialised with them. I am quite a loyal person and will always stand up for my 'people'

None from the tap sadly Feline. The build has hit a bit of roadblock this week.

I had bought some plastic tubs that were going to act as the sumps for my bottom drains. The one split when I was trying to get all the connectors on it. The second one got made OK while my wife went out and bought a replacement. Then realised that I hadn't actually filled them with water to test them. So filled the new one and it bowed a LOT under the water pressure. Possibly could have put something in place to help with that, but the killer was the fact that the sealant I was using didn't bond to the one I'd made up at all. Sticks like you know what to a blanket to the tank connectors but absolutely nothing to the plastic tubs. So between those 2 things I've had to go back to the drawing board (and order some replacement fittings).

Found some cold water storage tanks that will do the job but they are wider than the previous tubs I had. Picked those up Thursday night and now waiting for my mate to come round and see if we can make the pipe runs fit in the existing filter area. If not, then I'm gonna have to (carefully) knock down the one wall in the filter pit, dig some more and then rebuild which will be a bit of a killer.

Between that, the fact that it's now dark by 7:30 and the fact that it keeps on raining, progress has slowed right up unfortunately.

Have manged to get some more tiling done though and I've got the measurements for the coping stones done and out for a quote so not a complete bust.

Probably depends on what sort of work they do for you or you do for them as if it's just a one off job it's not very likely you'll be socialising with them will you? Also it helps if you don't live too far away from each other doesn't it?

Not necessarily! Matt came to mine for a one off job but we still all hit the pub in the evening
The building supplies delivery driver knows me well and came round to have a look at the build each time he came- I know quite a lot about him and his family from the few occasions he was with me for a few mins!

Has he offered you a ride in it yet?

Or will you only get a ride in it if he's the Godfather? Make him an offer he can't refuse

Glad to be of service Frim

Life's too short to be miserably eh? Joking aside, he's a Spurs (that goes against him obviously) reformed football hooligan (sterotypical massive big geezer with tattoos and a bald head) but is one of the nicest fella's you could wish to meet (now)

Blooming front door people were supposed to be here before 12 to sort out the seal, it's so blooming good, when you heave open the door it's like decompressing a space shuttle. Suffice to say, you have to give it so much welly the handle inside is a bit wobbly now. That's German Engineering for you eh?
Am needed in the office pronto, so if they don't turn up in the next 5 minutes then they'll have to come back another time...and tried to ring them, no joy.

My son cuts the bosses hair so I'll get him to lop a big chunk off the top next time he's in his shop

Sorry to hijack your thread with frivolity Adster, have you finished you pond yet?

    Back on topic now
