Day 20
Cleared about another meter tonight. Took Tashyface's advice and dug down a bit further to see if there was anything more solid. About an inch down in the area I dug I hit a layer of stones that were pretty tough, but in another area, I hit a layer of something that was rock hard at the level I was digging at. So I'm gonna clear as much of the hole as possible while I've still got my ramps in and see what I've got at that point.

Day 21
Cleared the one side wall this afternoon. Temperature was brutal so took it slow and steady and kept moving my parasol to try and stay in the shade. Levelled out the bottom as much as possible while going. Had to give up in the end as the amount of shade offered was getting less and less as the sun moved round. This side is pretty much done now with the exception of digging out a channel for some soil pipe that will go to my filter area.

Good steady progress, nice one Adam.
You probably don't need to worry too much if the bottom isn't nice and flat as concrete is self levelling. As long as it is not too dry.

Yeah, that's what I figured as I was going along. I guess so long as there's not too much deviance so you've got a relatively consistent depth of concrete.
Cheers for the heads up on the DPM guys. Was looking at it the other day wondering what type I needed so thanks for the advice.
It is a large hole John. Maybe too large, especially as there will be no water left in the taps by them time I'm done if the weather stays like this

Day 22
Basically working wherever I could to stay in the shade. Cleared some more down the right hand side, cut off the drain and cleared underneath it, and got my channel carved out ready for my filter waste pipe. It was flippin' hot again and the cloud cover only came over just as I was done for the day

Day 23
Temperature was decent tonight but got started too late to make much progress unfortunately. Probably got another 20 barrow loads cleared out but it doesn't show as much in the pic.

Day 26 & 27
After a week of emptying barrow loads into the skip and the hole not looking any further along, it started to feel like we were progress again tonight. Got a lot of the floor levelled off though you, again, you can't really tell from the pic.

Day 28
Discovered today, that the waste that I was going to tie the 2 drains into ended about an inch beyond where we'd dug out to, so it was just a soak-away. Good that I realised before I'd channelled out the wall for the new waste pipe, but does leave me with a bit of a dilemma about what to do with the 2 drains now. There only seems to be 2 options; take them both down below the level of the base of the pond into their own small soak-aways or tie them both into a waste pipe and dig a new soak-away under the lawn where the green wheelbarrow is in the pic below. That would mean channelling again but going down in the opposite direction.
Aside from that, did plenty more digging. Started properly eating into the ramps that I currently have and have reached a point now where I can’t make them much smaller without them becoming useless.

You can see the progress you've made in the last photo. Good going. Bummer about the drains

Looking good Adam
Have you worked out how you are going to get on when you have completely removed the ramp?

Cheers mate. Starting to feel like the end of the digging may be in site now, which is good as it's taken a lot longer than I'd anticipated (as things do!). Think I am going to dig a soak-away under the lawn. At least the water will be flowing away from the pond that way. Don't think I'd be able to relax any time it rained if they were just draining underneath the pond.
Cheers Frimley. So this morning I re-purposed the plank that I've been using to get into the skip. It's pretty long and pretty thick so with 3/4 full barrows I can get over it without any support below it. That should enable me to get another wedge out relatively easily. After that it all starts to get a bit slower and more hard work. I'm hoping that I'll be inspired when I'm actually faced with no ramp.
