Cheers John, it's hard work but doesn't require any particular skill. It's the bricklaying I'm less sure about. Speaking of which, anybody ever used one of these https://bricky.com/?

Day 13
Last few days have been focused on what to do with the pipe. Having channelled out some of the soil yesterday to see where the pipe goes, and having discussed it with my mate, I think we've got a plan.
I've dug under the patio where we will cut the pipe.
We'll then cut it off at the other end getting rid of the bit that's currently leaking. We've then got plans to "t" in a new waste line from the filter area. So I've uncovered all of the pipe tonight but in doing so uncovered the end of another pipe that doesn't appear to be tied into anything; possibly it was just done as a soak-away.
However, having attempted to prove that this is the drain for another bit of roof guttering, I managed to prove that as can be seen by the bit of water coming out of the pipe, however, that's nothing in comparison to the amount of water that flooded out on to my patio.
Therefore looks like the drain is blocked somewhere so now gonna have to try and sort that and attempt to "t" that into the new pipe that we'll fit. A bit more of a detour on top of the existing one. Hopefully it is just blocked and not collapsed. I don't think I'll be popular if I have to rip up the patio

Are you going to replace the old clay pipe, it looks like it has settled unevenly and I would suspect that further movement will crack the joints, replace it if you can, drainage pipe is very cheap and will save a lot of hassle in the long term, looking good though

Looks like it's going well Adster and I hope you get the existing offending clay? pipework issues sorted ASAP
It's amazing how much more dirt or soil comes out of any sized hole you dig than you expect
Keep up the good work it'll all be worth it in the end and just think of all that free exercise you're getting, much cheaper than going to the gym

Cheers Frimley.
Certainly is! Finished filling my first 8 yard skip today.
Timing is quite lucky as my gym recently suffered some fire damage so is inaccessible. Plenty of exercise going on at the minute though as you say. I think the gym is easier!!

Day 14
Did some angle grinding! Cut the pipe at both ends ready for the replacement pipe to be fitted. Also squared off the patio. Neatness has gone out the window last few days while I try to get the pipe sorted.
That's got rid of one of the other 12" borders and left plenty more soil to dig out.

Day 15
Today was mostly just shovelling some of the recently dug soil to get it into the skip. I'll post the pic and you can play spot the difference.
Also unblocked the drain pipe I mentioned on day 13 which is why the ground looks a bit wet in the pic. As you'd expect in a drain, there was a bit of brick and some other big stones in there which is why it was blocked. Gave it a good rinse through and it's no longer backing up on to the patio. Temperature was a killer today though.

Day 17
Nothing too exciting, just getting soil into the skip. I'll post the pic but doesn't look like we got a lot done even though we were at it for an hour and a half. Even at 8 p.m. the temperature was a killer.

Day 18
Just me on my own tonight so don't think I did too bad, but again doesn't look like much. Can't really tell from the picture, but I cleared about meter long stretch back down to base level.

A few questions then if I may.
When I eventually finish digging, before I get the concrete poured, do I need to put any ballast down? The bottom of my the hole is pretty much sand; could I just whacker plate that to compact it ready for the concrete?
Having looked at other build diaries, some people put down plastic before having the concrete poured. What dictates whether this is necessary?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Adam

You don't need hardcore if the sub-layer is compactable, I had thick clay so I didn't bother
The DPM, plastic serves a few purposes, it keeps the area clean and uncontaminated for the concrete pour, it stops surface water rising and keeps the concrete dry if you are fiberglassing and most importantly it prevents the concrete from drying out too quickly, especially useful in this temperature and in your soil conditions
If you use it put it down as late as you can and avoid walking on it as much as you can, it does puncture very easily4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass

Is it soft sand? I wouldn’t be building any structure on sand. Have you tried digging an inspection whole. There maybe good ground a few more inches down. If you have no choice as that just how the ground is in your area, when you order the concrete for the raft ask them to add fibres and make sure the pad is reinforced. If the ground is poor, I would consider digging a strip foundation until you reach good ground. If you treat it like an extension of your house the building inspector wouldn’t allow you to build on sand and you would have to keep digging. This is the most important part of the build to get right. Get it right and you’ll sleep at night and not have the expense and heart ache further down the line.

Just looking more closely, are you sure this isn’t the clay line? It’s hard to tell on the pictures, but I’m leaning towards you’ll be ok🤷🏼*♂️

Sorry Tashyface; I don't understand the question.
I would say that the sand is fairly soft; it's relatively easy to break up. I'll dig an inspection hole to see what's what, but I didn't really want to dig much further down than I am currently.
Having said that the sand is soft, my previous pond sat on it for over 2 years without any problem, though I appreciate that was just a liner.
