Use a clear resin or G4 clear sealant.

We used idealseal auto marine sealant and used wedges to level it off.

    Cement isn’t poisonous to koi!

Large areas of cement or concrete that are exposed to water will raise the pH which may push it out of the acceptable range and cause alkalosis but the thin mortar line of cement used to fix copings will be out of water and will only get wet due to splashes or rain so it won’t have any effect that can be measured.

To fix copings, use ordinary Portland cement and try to avoid dropping large amounts of mortar into the pond. Small amounts that drop in while fixing copings won’t affect the pH but you can catch anything that you do drop by floating a plank of wood or sheet of expanded polystyrene foam immediately below the work area. A tip to stop the plank or sheet from floating away from the wall while you’re working is to use a couple of lengths of string with small weights attached. Tie the strings to each end of the plank and hang them over the pond wall so that the weights pull the plank/sheet towards the wall. If you drop any cement into the pond it will be difficult to get it back out again so just sweep it so that it breaks up and sweep the sand down the bottom drain or vacuum it out.

As a precaution you could measure the pH before you start and check it for a few days afterwards. If you can see any increase in pH you can correct it by doing a water change but, unless you’re running at a risky low KH to begin with you won’t see any increase in pH.

I used a PU sealant like Laura did- Polyurethane Sealant | Idealseal Auto-Marine

I had a pack of plastic double glazing packers which stopped the weight of the copings sinking into the sealant (my copings are sawn slate so are v heavy).

Once it's had 24 hrs to go off it's totally fish safe and you never have to worry about lime leaching etc. It's also available in black so doesn't look unsightly against liner or a black fibreglass finish.
