New pond construction in progress, really appreciate feedback

Hello all, I'm a few weeks into the construction of my new pond, I'm nearing a few key decisions on filtration and would really appreciate comments from the experts

I'm posting weekly or so updates on youtube, the next will detail my current thoughts on filtration.

I am lucky enough to live in a stunning location
    , hopefully you'll find the video's interesting . Here's a link to my youtube channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpY...8Q4SWDYXWmUukQ

Fantastic location - what part of the world is that? For some reason I can't get onto YouTube on the phone but what's the final specification/filter set up?

Thanks for the kind comments , in answer to the questions:

Number of blocks, no idea but there'll be another few courses above the patio with a viewing window.

I'm located about 10 miles north of Swansea.

Filtration, good question, mechanical filtration will be a drum filter, I was going to follow this with a couple of barrels with K1, one static followed by a moving bed . . But I do have an IBC which would be great as a moving bed filter, loads of volume and easy to convert to a filter . Location of the filter is still to be confirmed, have a few options, I'll try to explain properly in my next youtube posting . Feedback on the options would be greatly appreciated, I'll post a link when it's online.

Just managed to look at videos on YouTube the views are amazing. Where's the nearest supermarket lol?

I would of stuck a couple of block piers on those outside walls of that blockwork just due to the final height/sloping ground. Judging by your last post it will be higher then patio.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a chat with the builder tomorrow. The pond structure is tied into the existing structure which should help.

I really am lucky with the location, it does feel like you're in the middle of no where but it is just a five minute drive to all the amenities .

Where are you locating the filter house. And running the pipe work to.
So as not to block view on the top of the patio decking. In your planned drawing. It does not show this.
    Looks awesome
I love the way its been built on the hill slope. I am a city boy. But i wish years ago. I had moved to a location with views like that.
Unfortunately the other half would nt have any of it. Love it.

Good question on location of the filter, it was going to be sited next to the decking but I had a chat with with builder about this and he's suggested using the Wendy house ( you'll see it on youtube when I pan round ). It's a good distance from the pond but luckily it looks just about the perfect height for a gravity fed system.

The kids are too old for the Wendy house now ( and were too scared to use it anyway because of the spiders ).

Sounds a good un. At least you will still have a great view without the filter house spoiling it.
    Good thinking on your part.

Hi all, I'm after some advice on the position of the pump, the filter house will be some distance from the pond, gravity fed, not sure of the physics on this . Would it be better to position the pump near to the return into the pond or is it OK to be in the filter house ?

As it's gravity fed does that mean it doesn't really matter, not sure if friction plays a part in having to move water a longer distance within the return pipe , or as the water is trying to find it's own level ( i.e. the same level as the water in the pond ) does it really matter ?

Here's a mock-up of the layout of the pond and filter house :
    filter pump.JPG

    Hope this makes sense .

I'll try to post an update on youtube tomorrow, some good progress this week .

    Thanks

    Hi Eifion,
As I am sure you never get sick of hearing and seeing that view is awesome (my kids would say sick... but I’m too old to pull that off)
I would suggest that the pump goes adjacent to the pond an Pumps to the filter house, so that it’s pumping and not sucking,
It easy to see read pump flow figures vs head of pressure graphs, much harder to calculate flow friction, I work with a load of mechanical engineers and some of it must have rubbed off a bit, but I could be talking complete crap.

it looks like we are on the same curve in pond building, but we don’t have a location anything like yours.

    Looking forward to your updates.
    Steve

Thanks Steve, that sounds right to me, I've also had comments that it doesn't make a difference where the pump is placed, but my first instinct was the it should be near the return .

I've just posted another update on YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF2DWfBplYI

Bit longer I'm afraid, I think the good weather made me a "trigger happy" with the camera . The decking makes a huge difference , still a long way to go though .

Again, please let me know if you've any questions or suggestions .

We have shedloads of Kites round here but yesterday there were 3 buzzards circling over the house. Very cool.

Awesome. Looks brill. Pictures step by step. I seen the video. And its good. But the the thread its self needs photos . Like reading a book.
Later down the line. I can come back and read and look at photos.
Or pass on to a newbie.
    Keep up the goid work.
