You have the same test kit as I have, when testing kh the first drop is no 1 which should turn blue.
Think you had two drops on your second drop and I think I counted 5 before the yellow so that is ok.
Ph looked just over 7.5 which is ok,what is your tap kh?
If I remember right it is 0.
Thanks John, that's good to know , I thought you counted the drops starting after the third drop if you know what I mean .

Yes that's right, no KH at all in the water from the tap .

As for flashing, one thing I've found difficult is not seeing the fish for several days as it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home ( and the pond lights have stopped working ! ) . So I didn't see a lot of them during this time, I do recall one of the fish do some very sudden changes of directions ( which I guess is flashing ?) but that is the only time .

Thanks John, I did watch a test on youtube where the were using the DPD No.4 Rapid tablets and they crushed the tablet in the tube . But I think your right, I literally added a drop of tap water and it turned pink so it's clearly very sensitive to chlorine .

What did you make the O2 reading anyway Eifion?
Not sure if it's my eyes or doing it in the house instead of daylight but I found it really difficult to batch the colour against the chart . It just seemed a different colour to those on the chart but for darkness of shade it was about 5 to 6 mg/l . I will need to do again though , I'll let you know .

I was told you should be looking for a reading of 7 to 8 mgl but it could be related to temperature like Ammonia is?

I found natural daylight was the best for judging the colour match on those tests but as you say it can be difficult to make an accurate call sometimes.

effion seeing as where trying to eliminate things out of all this. I still think its PH crash. i think if i remember right . you have a cartridge dechlorinater. when first time you run it, did you let the water run for about 15 to 20 minutes
to waste before you started using it in the pond water, as that's what I did wrong when I got a 3 pod cartridge dechlorinater. just pointing this out. as that was one of the mistakes I made.

Hello Fred, I did run water through the dechlorinator for quite a while before trickling into the pond. Hopefully that was OK and didn't contribute to the problems.

Hi Eifion, Ok so you have no kh from the tap same as me but it's not a problem as easy enough to keep on top of.
I am not a water expert by any means like Manky but I have learnt alot from here and Mankys site.
I have had a ph crash in my grow on a few years back with 25 x 6ins and I did panicked a bit so I rang Manky who put me right.
If you keep the kh over 5 you should be ok along with the ph,keep checking kh every few days when you have koi back in and you will soon know how much sod/ bicarbonate to add without measuring it out.
My main pond gets a cup full every week and that keeps it spot on without having to do tests all the time.
At least we have learnt from this be it the hard way and it is a learning curve, keep your chin up Eifion.
    John

Hello all, been a while since my last post, decided to go for the easy option in the end and added a few goldfish to get things going and give me some confidence in the water quality.

All the water tests are coming back fine except KH which is still lower than I'd hope . I am adding bicarbonate of soda every week so this will hopefully hold the KH levels up .

I've decided to go with some tosai which will be arriving later this morning, they look like stunning fish from the photo's . Just hoping everything goes OK this time .

Looking good, getting fish in will certainly give you some confidence in the water quality, although my dog decided to jump on the pond wall yesterday and then fell in the pond, I don't think that did a lot for the water quality

    Thanks for the video Eifion.
They look great tosai and will soon grow, how many drops is your kh counting the first one?
You will soon get used to how much to add and keep it at least 4 to 5.
Good luck with the new ones, where are they from Eifion?

Well as long as it didn't take a wizz or a dump in there then you should be OK Johnathan.

haha I bet it was a shock for the dog. last year I put my dog on his lead a few time and put him in the pond for a swim to cool him down. he loved it. after a couple of goes, he can t get out on his own hence the lead.
