What O2 kit are you using BTW? I was told the Tetra kit was the one to use but after 2 or 3 tests I was getting the same result of 5 mgl no matter how I tested or where I tested. I tried 3 different suppliers for the same Tetra O2 kit and got the same results every time. I was using the correct testing procedure according to the instructions so don't know why I wasn't getting the correct results unless there was a lot of dodgy batches going around at the time

Gay goldfish LOL
Maybe they were all male or all female Fred?
Could they have been sterilised or what ever you call it like Grass Carp are meant to be?
Maybe you misread the sign in the shop or on line? You thought they were 'important' gold fish when really they were 'impotent' gold fish LOL

Have you thought about Ghost Koi Eifion? They are meant to be pretty hardy too plus they grow to a good size.
Mine have survived a very small pond, a house move, several pond incidents where the water ended up only about 6" deep, new pond syndrome more than once, my lack of knowledge in the early days plus my steep learning curve of looking after them properly thanks to this site, a massive ammonia spike due to a blanket weed treatment FUBAR which even wiped out some tench and 6 very small albino grass carp, many winters in an unheated pond and one of our cats trying to catch them at feeding times.
Knowing my luck after saying this, they'll be floating on the surface tomorrow morning

I will look forward to hearing how you get on with the Tetra O2 kit Eifion as it could be something I was doing wrong and didn't realise as it was strange that I got a reading of 9 or 11 mgl the first time I tested after Lee Burrows had tested with his Tetra O2 kit a couple of days before and got 8 or 9 mgl and then after using a dose of blanket weed resolve I got a reading of 2 mgl then the next reading was 5 mgl and that's where it stayed!!! I even tried the test that Manky Sanke suggested with aerated pond water in one tub and boiled filtered via a Brita jug in another tub which again I think was aerated. Both tested at 5 mgl from the 2 new Tetra kits!!!

Results look OK apart from the the GH and KH as you say.
When you did the O2 test, the instructions say to slowly turn the test tube end over end once after the first 2 reagents are added and then twice after the third reagent is added. When I watched Lee Burrows test my water he made a point of doing it nice and slowly and smoothly. In your video you seem to just turn test tube on it's side and then back up again. Not sure what if any difference that makes?

Something hasn't knocked your filters back has it?
If you have a reading for Ammonia but nothing for Nitrite or Nitrate that means you either have very good filtration or they aren't working? Unless I'm missing something here Nitrate is a result of Nitrite being converted from Ammonia and then into Nitrate because of the correct amount and type of bacteria in your filters etc.

My mistake, just watched the video again and saw you have zero Ammonia, it looked like there was a hint of green when I first saw it. It is too early in the morning for me.
How are you removing the Nitrate so well?

Very good video Eifion.
Think you had a ph crash, were they flashing?
You have the same test kit as I have, when testing kh the first drop is no 1 which should turn blue.
Think you had two drops on your second drop and I think I counted 5 before the yellow so that is ok.
Ph looked just over 7.5 which is ok,what is your tap kh?
If I remember right it is 0.John

i aint got a clue how to use that test kit. i use API. but going by what frim and john say they look good. what i do if i get a reading that is not what it should be. i redo the sample test again.
sometimes i have found that if the bottles have not had a good enough shake. or i have not cleaned the test tube good enough from test before they can give false readings. also i then test the tap water for the tests
to make sure i aint putting into pond or tank from the tap. as john says. with your KH. it looks like you have had a PH crash.
as always mate a great video.

Should have said, when doing the dpd4 test drop the tablet into the tube of water while looking down the tube, should go pink nearly immediately of chlorine is there, only need to crush the tablet in half no need to shake it that much,so I have found anyway.

Thanks, I was a bit rushed at the end, I had completed all the tests apart from O2 and chlorine but when I checked the footage I'd somehow managed to miss the results for ammonia and nitrate, both of which need 10 minutes to complete . So I did rush the last bits, I'll be a bit more gentle with the O2 test next time

Maybe try the slower way next time and see what happens.
What did you make the O2 reading anyway Eifion?

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
