Hi effion. Glad to hear you and family are well. Also the fish and the pond.
    The filter drum float switch.
At least you learned something off it.
Get the covers done as quick as possible mate. As i bet that cold wind around there is very cold. As it being in the open.
Love the photo from the mountain top.

Hello Anne, I'm completely lost on which one you mean , I've just googled Aesculus Hippocastanum and there is one that looks like that in the field adjoining my garden, so it's possibly a yes …..

I bet you're glad you asked

Hello all, and a belated Merry Christmas .

I've posted the following on Youtube, it's a bit of everything since my last update : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqD2LN3fhMM

I've ordered some polycarbonate sheeting to cover the pond, hopefully I can fit this before the next "beast from the East" arrives . Any tips on the frame for the sheeting will be gratefully received, just planning on a simple 2"x2" wooden frame in a three sections . I'm thinking of building a frame over the water return as well so I can keep it running all year .

    Happy New Year

Thanks for the lovely video Eifion great home you have there.
Little tip on keeping the Squirrels off the feeders, have a plastic pole as an upright,ie, slide a plastic pipe over the wooden upright as they cant climb up plastic that is if you dont want them on the bird feeders.

Polycarb is great for insulation and 2x2 would be fine but i am sure someone else has a better suggestion.
Koi look as though they have grown a fair bit and nearly hand feeding, mussels are a great way to tame them when the weather gets warmer as they go nuts for them.
Keep the videos coming and a happy new year to you and your family.
    John

wish id been watching this build ….ive been a builder all my working life, I try not to comment on peoples builds because usually, although I might see things I would have done differently, whats been done will usually work, even if its not been done very well.
I would have pointed out the faults previously, but with a builder on site, my advice might have been ignored anyway.
Theres no way it would have held up long term, even if they used the proper concrete blocks, instead of those ash klinker rubbish, but It might have held up long enough that fish were in it, so I guess that was quite fortunate.
Gutted for you that you went through this , but a big thumbs up for seeing it through, that shows some quality.

Omg just watched that video ! Bet that woke you up! The main thing is everyone is ok. You manage to rebuild the pond? If so definately go with some piers or maybe even a couple buttress in that outside wall.

I would of stuck a couple of block piers on those outside walls of that blockwork just due to the final height/sloping ground. Judging by your last post it will be higher then patio.

Not sure if anyone can help ? I'm starting to get some problems since the proper cold weather started, initially a couple of the smaller fish started getting really lethargic, floating near the surface of the pond and with a day were dead . This has continued to happen every few days affecting another fish or two at a time .
At this rate they'll all be gone within a week or two .

I'm testing my water parameters and they are fine .

    I don't yet have a microscope so I'm unable to scrape .

Could it be that the pond didn't have time to mature ? But then again I'd expect something to show up in the water tests if this was the case .

I still have some exposed pipework as I didn't have time to fully insulate everything, could the water simply be too cold ?

Or could it possibly be a combination of all the above factors ?

Appreciate it's difficult to judge simply by my explanation, but any suggestions would be gratefully received .

hi effion. sorry about the fish mate. I went through the same problems 2 years ago. get it into your head mate. your pond is not mature. it takes 2 years for a pond to mature properly.
and it does not matter how many pond bombs you put in the pond mate. believe me I put lots in. the full pond plus the filters need to mature properly.
sounds to me something is making the fish float first. and then the cold is making them get hyperthermia while floating. if your description is correct. I had 3 fish last year do exactly the same thing. I fished them out and put them in my qt tank. with salt. and that saved them. they had hyperthermia, when I scraped them and used a micro scope nothing there. so that's what I put it down to. so now I have bought a cover. and it is helping a lot. is your pond covered. if I remember right your pond is not in the ground at all. its suspended I think. not in ground. so maybe at the deepest part it is cold. and no where for the fish to get warm. put a thermometer on a pole and see if the tempreture is the same on the bottom. as on the surface. is the body of the pond insulated. meaning the brick work. as your back garden is facing the weather elements all the time. I am just guessing here.

how high is the air running at mate.
are you still doing water changes and using ST
are you trickle in and out and using ST
are you still feeding the fish
    anything leeching into the pond
how often are you cleaning the filters
    oxygen tests is it ok
KH test GH test is it ok
nitrite nitrate ammonia PH tests you say there ok. have you also tested from the hose end or taps with these tests

sorry for all the questions mate. but need a bigger picture. to be able to help. I had a lot of these problems and it took me a year to sort them. cement leeching took me ages to find this. oxygen. a few of us have had this. me being one. chlorine I also had this problem. also the main one new pond syndrome lasted for 2 years on my pond. I had to many fish in the pond as well.
    hope some of this helps
    fred
