It's a lovely pond Forest, you must be pleased as punch
Your fish look so tiny in there!
I have a few fish I am needing to move on in the next 12 months or so, they are not very high quality though and I'm a bit of a drive from the south coast. But would not be looking to charge for them, if you were wanting some reasonably big free koi to start with.Last edited by Feline; 10-09-2018 at 11:03 PM.

Lovely pond, I’ll send everyone round to your gaff who’s been to mine and said “why didn’t you make that a swimming pool, it’s massive!!”
I’ve tried explaining that mine is quite modest and that really I wanted it twice the size and they look at me as though I’m mad.

Looks the buisness mate. Really nice. I am over the moon for you mate.
A lot would have given the rebuild a swerve. And give up.
Respect to you.
So now enjoy it.
Keep an eye on the parameters.
All the best in fish keeping

Cheers All,
Yes Skoosh its Rainbow sandstone, and looks even better when its wet.
Cladding around the shower, some downlights on the back wall cladding, and some planting in the veg pond and we will be done...ish
On the subject of plating though I guess most water plants die off to some extent in the winter ? so is it worth planting this up now and if so does anyone have any recommendations ?
Feline many thanks for the offer, I am sure I will be posting regularly and we can stay updated, but if my regular impulsive nature wins through my next post is likely to be about issues with overstocking ;@)...resist..resist.
We will take our first set of reading tonight , I guess test regularity depends on feeding and stocking rates, for now would once a week be OK ?2>1+1

Hi All,
Well we have been water testing regularly, and no dramas so far but the alge growing on the bottom and sides is getting quite long now and although we quite like the way it sways in the current I fear it could 6” long by the end of the spring.
Is this anything at all to be concerned about ?
I have seen water change qty expressed as a % of volume per day /week but I assume that rule of thumb changes significantly with pond volume and stocking levels, we have a large pond (closer to 50000lts inc filters) and very low stocking levels at the moment, is there a relatively simple way to calculate the amount of water we should be changing, we have an auto top up with an in-line water meter so can see how much is going in and therefore going out.
So far we have been letting the drum filter do it’s own thing, but maybe we should raise the foat switch to get a more regular clean cycle and flush out more pond water per day, lower the nitrate and slow the grass growing..maybe...... welcome your opinions2>1+1

I think that blanket weed looks very happy! It could really kick of when the warmer weather arrives - never mind 6" you could have several feet! I would treat it sooner rather than later - it blocks filters up something horrible if you let it get out of hand. What is your nitrate level? - is that an anoxic pond the shower discharges into? The theory is that anoxic ponds should reduce the need for water changes but the rule of thumb is minimum 10% /week. Some tap water supplies have high nitrate so water changes don't always help controlling blanket weed. I use 50% dose of CBA and I usually only have to dose once but it does need temp above 10 deg not sure if any of the others work at lower temps.
6000g in ground koi pond
+3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

Pond looks great - get some Aqua Source - Resolve, Blanket Weed Treatment in there, and monitor the drum closely for a period of time thereafter.
Dead easy to use, just sprinkle around the edge - i've used it the past two years, and it works wonders.
I don't even treat the entire volume of water, do a half dose and observe, if more is required - add it.
Be ready in the spring with more, as you'll need it !Its a hole in the ground where I throw my money!

Hi all,
Just a quick update, I did treat the pond with a 4kg tub of cloverleaf blanket weed answer, and I can certainly tell its working by the amount of time I have had to go an unblock the P trap into which my drum filter waste goes.
I has to raise the float level in the drum filter considerably so it flushed more often with less veg matter, but it is now maintaining itself OK.
The water is still quite green with suspended blanket weed so I guess the treatment is still doing it job, but with the amount I am flushing away through the drum and the auto top up it will be significantly diluted by now, we will keep an eye on it and maybe do another dose in a month or so, I'm not looking (or expecting) to get back to bare gel coat but just want to keep it under control.
We have bought a load more pond plants so hopefully they will out compete for nutrients once established.
We picked a few more mid sized fish at New Forest Koi last weekend, and I need to much less impulsive, although happy with what we got2>1+1

I have a Blummin nightmare with Blanket weed too, I suspect it's the phosphates in our water supply, as I just can't shift it! I'm only a stones throw from you.
If your water is green, then that would indicate free floating algae, which is a different issue to blanket weed, and that's where a UV comes in.

The Water is green(ish) but that only happened since we started treating for Blanket weed so I think/hope its just the blanket weed breaking down saturating the water, the drum filter is on over time as was cycling every 10mins.
Having said that the temp has gone up quite a bit over the last few weeks and we have started feeding again..so maybe it is an algae bloom.
We have an 80W Amalgam UV but it is a big body of water, may we need to fit another ?
I'm in all day tomorrow if you fancy popping over for a brew (or a beer), and having as look.
Cheers

I had quite a bit of algae earlier in the year but it seems to have calmed down now, the water is nice and clear, but I keep getting long string alga from the bottom of the pond about 1 meter in length, just random strings of it, I started feeding a few weeks ago

I just remembered this morning, that whilst flushing through the worst if the broken up blanket weed (post treatment) I ramped all the pumps up to max (1x30000, 2x20000l/Hr) to filter the bits out as quickly as possible, this in turn is obviously decreasing the retention time the Drum filter as all inlets and outlets go through it, and my UV is in the clean side of the drum.
So I have just been out and adjusted the flow rates again back to normal, Shower at 80%, Pond return 50%, Veg filter 30%
Hopefully this will see things back to normal and me not rushing out to get another 80W UV....out Elec bill is massive enough.2>1+1

Hi,
Ive just posted on the A&E section for advice, so thought I should update on the pond in general.
Its interesting to read that this time last year we were struggling with blanket weed, throwing in additives and constantly unblocking the drains, this year we have had no such problems, and I can only out that down to a mature veg filter, out competing for nutrients, and this winter and spring we have not run the bottom drain air all the time, and in fact have only been running it a could of times a day to help stir up the bottom and let the drum filter deal with it, now things are starting to warm up we are running the air more and soon it will be on all the time.
Our V large K1 filter is well aerated, and the Baki shower I’m sure adds enough air when the water is cold.
Last year we added a 2nd UV to the drum filter, which was good as the old one has now failed, so I don’t think we need 2x running but having a back up is useful.
My large Jabao pump failed last autumn, and I got a new one under warranty, but haven't got around to replacing yet (it’s not pleasant in the pit), the systems can be valved off so either of the 3 pumps can take the duty, this has proven that that 2 of the pump on about 80% is enough to run the system, so it’s good to have some redundancy.
You might see in the corner this years project my ‘72 Mini Moke that going to have an Electric Conversion.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
