Thread: New Pond Build

Hi Tom,
We bought them last year when we built the pond. The ones we bought last year have all grown quite a bit with the exception of the Tancho which has not grown at all.
The Matsuba which you like is the best looking fish in the pond, its just stared to had feed this year.
In the second fish photo the small Soragoi fish in the center has grown about an inch in a few weeks. It hand feed the second day it was in the pond probably because its greedy.
I am going to scrape them this weekend as there is still something that not right with them, I might take a few more photos and measure them.

Who's the breeder for your Matsuba Scorchio?
I think it looks very similar to mine, but the seller couldn't remember who bred it and I wonder if it's from the same breeder as yours.

Hi RS,
I think its from Ogata, I have text the dealer Koi Masters to see if he can remember. Its probably the best fish I have.

Thanks Scorchio. I'll have a look at some Ogata Matsuba photos to see if there's any traits mine has.
Sounds bad but I'm not sure if I like mine, he's a little bit too off-white for my liking and hard water doesn't help. He has a big gash in his head which you can see in the pic below. He jumped in the first couple of days of having him (as they sometimes do) and hit his head on the mesh pond cover. 6 Months later and still not healed.
But he has the best eating technique, at the surface, mouth wide open, and all the pellets get drawn into his mouth, whilst other fish are splashing around blowing blowing bubbles and pushing the food away!
EDIT: Can't find any Gin Matsuba's from Ogata, so maybe it isn't from there.Last edited by RS2OOO; 02-05-2019 at 10:53 AM.

That looks nasty.
Mine used to be very shy but for some reason this year its completely different. It will come up with the others and take food almost out of your hand.

Hi RS,
The Matsuba is from Suetsugu. Chris from Koi masters has just text me to let me know.

Cheers fella.
Can't find anything about Matsuba's from Suetsugu. I guess the mystery remains unsolved, but from the pics there definitely seems a likeness between yours and mine, albeit yours looks younger and better lol.

I don't know If I've already written this, but my lad lives in Horsham and we went up there last week, so we all popped up to Gatwick Koi, the fish he has are stunning the colourings are so vivid its unreal, I've never seen fish like it, Im used to seeing them in places like Maidenhead Aquatic's and garden centre's, noway are they Japanese fish they can't be.
I thought I'd be happy just having any Koi in my pond, but my eyes have been blown open, so its got be Japanese fish for me now, be a very slow stock up though with what they cost lol

Like your statement Tom,
Opened your eyes to Jap koi and you are hooked.
But one thing is you havnt bought Garden centre koi so you can concentrate on what YOU want and that is good.
Neath is in S W Wales if I am correct.
There is a breeder near Camarthen who I have bought koi from in the past and you could go for a nosey if you want to.John

Filter pit extension coming along
Cladding finished.
Internal floor to finish probably decking as the ground is on a steep slope.
Roof to do board and seal then run electrical cable to new sockets.
Hope to have floor in this week ( weather dependent ) can only do a couple of hours each day after work.
Note to self check roof height from floor.

That looks great Scorchio, I love it.
That middle section over the pond.... You could hang some kind of Koi related wall art on there, would finish it off nicely.
