Ideally you need to use something like this.
Tangential Pond Return (TPR)

Well if they have to re-fibreglass the returns, maybe they could cut a small section out and fit something for piece of mind.
You might be able to slip these ones over the pipe and not use the top ring.

That might work if needed but there due tomorrow to fix and I dont have any to hand and no shops local to me.
I don't think I could fit them now.
I had the pond exactly as they requested, the company never mentioned putting flanges on the returns.
Will know more when they call tomorrow.

Seal on both bottom drains to fibreglass have failed.
Have emptied pond completely and climbed in to check returns.
Water under the fibreglass is coming out into the bottom drains when you walk about

No it’s very grim.
Not sure how they should have been sealed
I don’t want to find myself in the same situation again.

That's bad news, sorry to hear that, it must knock you for six, i'd be totally devastated
They should be sealed across the top and down into the BD, probably half way down
I'm no expert when it comes to this kind of thing but to me the foam doesn't sit right
The only way I have seen insulation installed is when it is cut at 45 degrees, and short of the drain, so that the resin can adhere to the top flange and also the sides of the BD, anything adhered to foam could crack on a 90 degree bend if there is any give on the foam, it creates a weak point around the rim of the tight 90
I would think something like this would spread the load better - As I say, I'm no expert

Thats what should have been done but wasn't.
Company been out today to look and are going to take the whole floor up and redo.
We have discussed taking out the floor insulation and re-glassing without.
At this point in time I think that is the best option, at least I know it cant move and leak again.
its 3 foot underground so I hope the removal wont make to much of an impact oh heat loss in winter.
There fixing it tomorrow so fingers crossed again.
It shouldn't have leaked but they have come out and are going to fix, cant fault them on the response really.

good luck mate and sorry to hear of the problem. good idea on moving the kingspan off the bottom. also check bottom drain to see if it needs any sealant. where it protrudes near the concrete mine had lots slapped on there before glassing
best of luck fingers crossed for you.

Hi Fred,
Are your returns flush with the walls ?
Mine were left protruding about 25 mm, the walls are insulated and i'm not sure if the returns should be flush and the glass made into them.
Thanks

New Pond Build
Does that help, from an old Coastel Koi Article - I thought best practice was indeed flush.

Yes mate there flush with my render.
And as rob has shown that is how they should be.
When my returns where cut flush i insisted that at the meeting with the render i wanted gold sealent on them around the joint.
And then when they glassed them they layed the glass right Over top of the sealent. And inside the pipe Then the next day after sanding. Put float coat on. And once dry. Put another coat over the top of returns again.
Same with bottom drain. Sealent where cement meets drain.
Then glassed over sealent and inside botyom drain.
Hope this helps mate. Good luck
Fred

Thanks I will get them to cut flush and glass into them.
fingers crossed they don't leak.
They told me they don't do it when the walls have been insulated as they put sealant around the pipe where it meets the insulation so water pressure pushes the glass onto the sealant.
