7n dense concrete for me on the blocks question,as for skimmer,if it was me and thinking of where you putting the water blade, then i would put it bottom right next to fence, this would put it on the long fence wall and would be easy to get to,also means a nice straight pipe run back to filter house and to hide it you could stick a flower trough or something on skimmer lid, also means it would be in the corner your first return and the blade will push water to,and before 2nd return pushing back towards filter house, andi

So looking at the last photo that I posted are you saying to put the skimmer at the far left opposite end to the filter house but on the fence line wall

I would personally put the skimmer on the wall where the filter house is going then design the rest of the pond around that. But your moves may vary!

In my present pond because I have 2 bottom drains I was going for a double vortex effect in the flow (opposite flow direction down to the bottom of the 2 drains). Ideally I would have therefore had 2 skimmers, one in each side wall. But you need to consider that the back of a skimmer has a pipe coming out of it and is not a pretty thing to look at. In the end I decided on one skimmer in the middle of the back wall going straight into the filter house, which has worked well and has left the visible pond walls free from anything unsightly. All my returns are below outside ground level. Wherever you put the skimmer you then site returns to push water towards it, making sure the corners of the pond don't become dead spots in flow. There are so many different ways to do this there is not just one successful recipe here.

Thank you for the advice. I have some concerns in that if I site the skimmer in the pump house wall, the water blade that I plan to install as a feature will render it useless. If I choose a location along the fence line wall any unsightly pipe work will be hidden. I have to leave a space between this wall and the fence anyway because there are other services, drainage, power etc that have to be installed there.

I don't know the right answer but I put mine so the pipe was underground outside the pond ended up been about 500 off the bottom of the pond.

You really want to be able to get to your skimmers easily so it would make it difficult if they were on the side near the fence. Not only do you want to be able empty the baskets but I also often use my skimmers to administer treatments such as blanket weed control etc.
Why not put one in the far left hand corner as you mentioned and then put the other one a few feet along from the filter bay wall towards the house.
I have two skimmers and two returns. One return enters the pond about mid table and is angled slightly around the pond and down towards the base, the other enters straight about 300mm down and again pointing around the pond. The positioning of the returns makes the water rotate slightly keeping surface debris on the move causing it to be picked up by the skimmers.
My pond has a wall all the way round but the skimmer pipe work was hidden inside of the wall during construction, couldn’t you do the same?

my 2 skimmer returns are 18 inches off the bottom. my pond is round . so the currant it causes bottom and top surface make it move around for bottom drain and surface skimmer.
in a a square pond you have to work it out. so as not to have dead spots in the corners. other ways is to bench the corners.

like to give his autograph out haha. i have even kept a couple of the marks to remember him by. my new dog stays away. when anything is going on now. yeah blocks are heavy.. but great to see pile going down.

your blockwork skills look a lot better than mine I've managed to get 2 courses completed in the last couple of weeks. How high up are you putting your returns?

It would have taken me forever Steve. The blocks you see in the picture were laid in seven hours on Saturday. Weather permitting the pond blocks will be finished this Saturday, with the filter house to follow once the floor has been cast
