It's all well and good chucking loads of bacteria into the pond water but you need to remember you need something for it to feed on or it may not last very long?

Oh didn't think of that hopefully the bacteria I dosed throughout the first week had enough to feed off of even if the first lot didn't. Time will tell I guess from the tests

I've got a mesh cover over the top of my pond to stop unwanted guests feeding on the fish when I got home tonight I found a bird had got under the mesh and drowned itself. Is there another way of protecting the fish without using the mesh and thus not killing anymore birds. I felt really bad that it happened but I want the fish to be safe at the same time especially as they are so small at the moment. The mesh is only cable tied to plastic trucking at the moment and there are a couple of small gaps which is where I guess the bird managed to get in.

Pergola with a perspex or polycarbonate roof maybe, just don't go to high above top of pond wall.
Well that's one of my plans, notsure about netting in general as you don't want fish jumping and hitting it which might cause them injury, could build a frame rising maybe a foot above the water level, which may then not cause them an injury if they did jump.
Another point though is why are they jumping is it because of water quality or somin bacterial?
Not that you've said they're jumping mind, I'm just thinking aloud so to speak, otherwise known as talking to myself

I was thinking of putting a pergola on eventually so that I could enclose it in the winter and also stop some of the blossom and bits from the tree getting into the pond. The cover is to stop any birds from eating the fish they haven't been jumping if they have it's been whilst I'm not there

My pond cover is 2" steel mesh.
I've also worried about the possibility of a bird falling in when they come down to try and drink the pond water but can't quite reach it.
Your situation basically confirms there's a good possibility one will fall in and drown eventually.
Not sure what to do long term but short term you've prompted me to remove the cover from a section of pond that has no fish in it.

Another thing, a lot of young birds are learning y to fly at the moment and sometimes land on the pond mesh. Guess they are at most risk of losing balance and falling in.

yeah unfortuantly i had another one yesterday, there are only a couple of small gaps so they must be geting in through those. i'll have to get the pergola sorted quicker that I wanted to but in the long run it will be better for the wildlife in the garden.

Would siting some kind of accessible water bowl or bird bath prevent them from attempting to drink from the pond?

not sure, i have a bird feeder about 10 foot from the pond which has a water bowl so not sure why they favour the pond. i'll have a look at lunch time to see what i can do in terms of a pergola for the pond. doe the roof need to be made from polycarb sheets to let light through or could i get away with ply covered with roofing felt?

4 days and 4 birds in the pond, 3 dead I saw the last 1 today just as I was about to.go out so rescued it. Definitely going to have to go with a pergola will look at that next weekend. On the bright side I've laid the turf and put the slate chippings behind the sleepers had loads left over so done the front flower bed too
