Looking to get my first few fish this weekend will be getting 4 to 6 fish only small just to get the filters going. Are there any tips once I've introduced them to keep them healthy whilst the filters start maturing. I'm going to pick up some live bacteria

Now that I've introduced the first lot of fish I know I have to wait to put more in so that the filters can mature, but how do I know when they are matured enough to add a couple more.

Well what I am going to do when I start adding fish to my QT system Steve is test the water and see if Ammonia is being converted to Nitrite and then to Nitrate and when I only have readings for Nitrate and the other 2 are virtually zero then I would like to think that my filters are maturing fairly well so would then keep an eye on the readings for a week or so and if I am feeding a constant amount with steady readings I would think I should be OK to add another fish or 2 and then again keep testing regularly and be prepared to have to do a few quick 10% to 20% water changes if the readings start to go up and stay up. May be a bit different for a QT and a main pond speed wise possibly but the basic principle is the same - know your filtration's limits and let that be your guide to what, when and if you can add extra fish.
As always these are just my thoughts and others may differ - they usually do
Good luck and keep up the good work on your pond

9 months for my filter to keep on top of parameters.
And after 1 year a very mild CT treatment knocked back nitrites for a few days.

Wow the mrs and I have just priced up the rest of the bits we want to finish the garden off, sleepers, sand, turf, slate and some lighting almost another £1k not to mention all additional work that it'll cause. There was me thinking it the expense and hard work was over

First set of water tests completed today after putting the fish in last weekend. I have to do a water change tonight which will be the first one since the fish went in. Anything look bad on the results I thought they were ok for the first week. Also when I do the water change do I put declorinator in before I fill the pond back up or after. I've got a proper declorinator but need to get the hose connections to run it which will be the job for this weekend once I've finished the garden off.

As your filters mature you will find Ammonia and Nitrite readings will hopefully drop to 0 but Nitrate will maybe go up as 10 is quite low but a good reading for Nitrate specially with a new filter system

Thanks so nothing really to worry about at the moment? I stuck 2 litres of liquid bacteria in the pond Saturday last week before the fish went in then completed 6 days of adding 160ml more liquid bacteria a day into the pond. I'm hoping that has helped, that and the fact I've only got 5 small fish just to get the filters going and have been feeding them once a day making sure there is no excess food floating about after about 5 mins.
