As an electrician personally I would err on the side of caution and go for waterproof sockets where ever there is any possibility of water being sprayed on them if say a hose comes off or springs a leak. But if you apply the same rules that you do in a bath room or shower room then as long as they are more than 3m from any source of water then a standard socket is OK - personally I think that's wrong as you could still have wet hands when you go to touch the socket and then the 3m rule is worthless basically.
Basically RCD protect anything that is related to water and use waterproof sockets where any water is present or spraying of water is possible.
And just remember waterproof sockets are only waterproof if the lids are shut and the catches are attached properly.
Just remember water and electricity don't mix so you need all the help you can get if you are using them both together.

As for inlet and outlet on your pump Steve, usually the picture on the outside of the box shows the pump with a pump cage fitted (well this applies to all the pumps I've bought recently) The cage is fitted to the inlet. There is quite often an arrow showing flow direction on the side of the pump case somewhere obvious. So looking at your photo I would say it's mounted the correct way so it will pump up to the barrel filter.

Nice one John, just shame I don't apply the same rules to my shed LOL well it's a work in progress but that's no excuse is it really I just make sure I have my wellies and marigolds on when ever I do anything in the filter shed
Unfortunately I can't tell people to do it the way I do it I have to tell them the correct way to do it or I could be in trouble should something go wrong
Where there's a blame - there's a claim

I'll get waterproof sockets then especially as the kids will be in and out might take a different view if it was just me going in there. My sparky is going to run the cable from my consumer unit as a separate fuse and then fit an additional unit in the filter house to run all of the electrics from.

Frim,
On electrician forums the standard answer is.....
If you have to ask the question you shouldn't be doing the work yourself. Save your family from certain death and get a qualified sparks in to do it.
If you took that line you could make a fortune on here. But it would leave little time to finish your QT build..

As the regs changed a couple of months ago you now are supposed to fit a SPD a surge protection device. The only problem is no body really seems to understand how they work and if you read the regs it's still a grey area as to if you actually have to fit them on a domestic property. It's all to do with risk assessments and the value of the items it's protecting etc. plus not all the manufactures are making them for their fuse boards yet so it's difficult to comply with that reg at the moment unless things have moved on in the last few weeks?

I'm not doing any of the electrical work other than wiring the plugs on to the bits. I have a mate who's a sparky and will be doing it for me. Had enough when I had to put the sockets indoors for the 2 tanks I've got and even then my mate came and helped

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
