Mine is about that size and my window is 1145mm should still be strong enough because most the strength is in the corners

Thanks I'll go for the bigger window then and hope for the best. Did you put any extra supports on the window wall at all or just blocks and mortar

  3. #363
I never put anything extra just built the walls as normal, although I haven't got my window or filled the pond up yet so I could be wrong Steves 1st pond build

i'd like to start planning the layout of my filterhouse/shed over the winter so that I can think about what needs to be built. I want to put 3 water containers in there around 200 litres each, the first will be for water to top the pond up, the second will be for water to top up my marine tanks, the third will be for salt water used for water changes on my marine tanks. Is 200 litres enough for top up of a pond and what do I need to factor in for water changes on a 3000ish gallon pond. Does anyone have any websites where I can buy the containers that wont end up costing me a fortune. Could I potentially use the same pure water used in my marine tank to top up and do water changes on my pond, if so I would look at getting a 1000 litre IBC container.

agree with andi also trickle in and out, your then doing continuous water change. adding sodium thiosulphate every couple of days. thats what i do. ST is very cheap. six to seven pounds of ebay
lasts me about a year. thats putting a teaspoon full in every 3 days. tops its self up for evaporation. also for my drum. i use crystals, some make up a liquid solution. i trickle in and out half a liter
a minute. i up it to 3\4 liter in high feed times in summer.

id worry more about how strong you and your helpers are rather than the wall, as its a big heavy lump to shift and orientate, you lose some in the framing so i went bigger, and my back knew about it

thanks, I have some helpers to come and help out with the glass, ive got a 5 foot tank and a 6 foot tank so used to handling heavy awkward glass objects. how does the trickle filter work ie where does the water trickle into filter/pond and then how to you get rid of the excess water that will be going in?

I've just checked the weather for the next week or so on the trusty old iPhone, looks like we are in for weather that's too cold to do any more blockwork for a while daytime temps maximum of 5 degrees but falling to minimums of -1 to 2 degrees. I've managed to get 3 courses laid in the past coupe, of weeks so am I best off just covering the blockwork over with a tarp and waiting till next year to carry on or carry on and hope for the best?

my water trickles into my top pond. then into lower pond. with a small piece of garden hose. from a tap i had installed. and over flows from my nexus waste pipe to drains.
so i Put ST into pond. i used to top up into my exit on nexus exit. but wondered if i was getting chlorine in my outer bio. so changed to upper pond.

some people put a toilet type system into skimmer. and top up that way. i think you can buy a skimmer with trickle top up in skimmer. feline has it i believe. i might be wrong.
also for the out part you can build an over flow into your pond with pipe work. good time to hide it while your building.
my pond the other year carried on building all the way through the winter. not as cold as what where getting from thursday though. so yours is a good idea to knock it on the head.

You can add Wintamix solution when you mix your mortar to help prevent freezing.
It also helps if you can store your bricks/blocks under cover before you use them to prevent them becoming saturated if it rains.
If you then cover well overnight you should be ok.

My mains water supply to the pond feeds the RDF then goes through a de chlorinator
and feeds a top up tank. I have a tap on the pipework to which I have connected a pipe that goes to the pond to supply the trickle in. The flow can be adjusted by opening or closing the tap. I have fitted an overflow pipe to the drum so that when the trickle In raises the water level it overflows into the drums drain.

thanks, I'm in no rush to get the blockwork done and to be honest if its that cold out I'll probably not want to be standing out in the cold for hours on end. I can pick it back up again next year and get the blockwork finished in the spring. If we do get any warmer weekends i'll go out and do what I can

Fair play, I don’t blame you!
Should be an enjoyable process building your pond, not an endurance test.

very true, I've been drafted in this weekend to board out the mother in laws loft so ill be nice warm and dry, and probably very itchy by the time I finish with the fibreglass insulation that's up there. still it'll be good practice for when I glass the pond

If I we’re you I would put it in your contingency fund, believe me you’ll need it sooner or later.
