how do you find the pond paint and render, I looked at that option but was told that overtime the render could crack and cause me issues down the line, so was told to go with fibreglass as that was more secure and longer lasting plus it would give me a smooth finish on the inside of the pond. thinking of putting render on the 2 outside walls that would be seen, the other 2 walls will be hidden, 1 by a fence the other by a shed do no need to put a finish on those.

    Hi mate
I've been a plasterer for the last 20 years so rendering wasn't a problem, really strong mix, fully meshed and troweled smooth, not sponged finished
    Mines smoother than fibre glass
But a patch of my paint came off
Pond isn't leaking but still annoying
    Celotex/kingspan then fibreglass
If I had to do it again
It might cost a bit,but as everyone on here says is do it right do it once
As it'll cost twice as much doing it again

Ok thanks fibreglass it is then might take me longer to save for it but it'll be worth it in the end. More digging done tonight another 31 bags of crap taken out another 6ish foot long to dig then making the pond wider hopefully it'll be done by the end of June or mid July

Hi Steve,You have your work cut out there, sounds a similar build to mine nearly 3000 gals.

Personally i wouldnt go 6ft deep,i think 5ft is deep enough you have to think about catching them, and maybe 6ft wide. You know what space you have available.

If your on a budget i would use the sieve then a home made shower out of stacking crates, not too hard to make as your a diyer.
Then when funds allow change the sieve to a stand alone drum easy swap,Aem do a good priced one.
Mine is 13ftx10ftx4ft deep,i would have gone deeper but i had water ingress problems, but i have no problems.

    Good luck with the build.
    John

I've dug down to 4 foot with the intention of sticking some MOT down and then a 9 inch slab on top to lay the blocks on. if 6 foot is too deep I could just build the pond 2 foot out of ground rather than 3 which would take me roughly to 5 foot. I cant go any wider than 5 foot as when I take into consideration the blockwork its going to be nearer 7 foot wide and I'm already in the doghouse for going that wide, I'm also really close to my fence to be able to go as wide a possible, I've attached a picture of where I'm currently at still need to dig back to the shed and then make it wider, will all be squared off and the ledge will be gone too but that's my step at the moment to get in and out.

are there any designs anywhere for home built showers and as this is going to be gravity fed does it need to be at the same height as the pond like other filters IMG_1716.JPG

I agree with john on depth. Mine is six feet deep. Nightmare catching my fish in net. 4 1/2 to 5 feet. Perfect depth. If i had it rebuilt.

If you have gone 3ft then fine,i would keep it at 3ft out of the ground nice to lean on and watch the koi with a beer and safe with kids.

6ft is fine, but i have heard some experts say 5 is sufficient or 1.5 mtrs, some will disagree with me on here, just trying to save you some cash.

Loads on U tube for showers, basically gravity to sieve [ same height as pond ] then pumped to shower, they recon the shower is the best filter for bio,so the Japs say anyway.Only problem with the shower is they chill the water in winter so need to be very well insulated or something.Very small footprint.

ok thanks, looks like I could be going for a shallower pond then will mean its only raised out of the ground by 2 foot as I'm already down to 4 foot and don't want to have problems by backfilling with 1 foot of soil, and as john1 said will save a bit of cash too. had another quote come back today for fibre glassing the pond this one came in at £1850. had a quick look at showers and seem to be easy enough to make just need to figure out what type of media to put in each crate.

    Steves 1st pond build

Ive always been an advocate of 4-5 ft been enough on depth but alot of people snigger at me for it. Each to there own but ive never had anything over 4.5 ft and no problems, never had any swim bladder problems anyway. For me anything less than 4 ft is too shallow and 1.5mtr which is 5 ft is pretty much max but thats me.

Thanks 5 foot it is then should have asked this question earlier would have saved me a foot of digging oh well 3 foot in the ground 2 foot above ground. Will save me a bit on building material and fibre glass although may have to dig the filtration into the ground a bit 🤔

You could allways stagger the floor from 6ft to 5 ft two drains and have your 3ft wall, just a thought,or to 4 ft.

I don't think anyone's built their first pond without wanting to change something later on
    The hobbies always evolving
    Good planning and prep work
Change/add stuff later due to wanting to,not due to failure of workmanship
    Or something like that lol
My ponds not perfect, but I did my best,I want another window the other side that's my biggest regret,it's doable, but a lot of hassle

Ha Ha Freddy boy making me laugh.

It was just a do-able thought,i have heard of a few who have done it Chris at Koimasters to name one,and if you think about it it gives the koi variation of depth.

Just a thought Steve, carry on digging only 1ft shallower while you think.

Could be an idea how do I then run the bottom drains as the shallow end would be the filter housing end would I just dig a trench to run the pipework or elbow up and over the extra foot
