I spent the day today digging and running backwards and forwards to the tip I'm now up to 8 foot long by 3 foot wide so1/4 of the way through the digging stage. I took around 90 bags out today and it looks like I've done nothing again

to be honest my car looked terrible during and after transporting all of that to the tip and I'm only 1/4 way through the digging. I've lost the next 2 weekends due to having other bits planned and completing a patio for my wife's aunt next weekend still it will give my back and arms time to recover was a lot of hard work yesterday digging all of that out.
I have been offered some new pond equipment for a reduced price due to someone who was going to build a pond but has now decided against it. they have a sieve, UV, pump and bead filter for sale I just need to agree a price with them. how do people view bead filters as a source of filtration I was told this would be a better option to the nexus filter but not sure if that's true just to get the sale. I would like to put a drum filter on the pond eventually but that's a way off due to lack of funds at the moment so i'd need to either put a nexus on the pond or the bead filter.
I also need to work out how many gallons the new pod design will be.

No you can't run both into the nexus. And don't be tempted to run both BDs on the same single piece of pipe as it won't work. 2BDs with their own individual line.

You can run 2 BDs into one sieve, in the same way you can into a drum. Obviously valve on each on so you can balance the flow between them.

Thanks was going to put the sieve before the nexus to catch the main stuff before it entered the filter. Would a nexus be better than the bead filter and if so would I need a 300 series or 200 series nexus

If you run the nexus after a sieve then you have the problem of either having to pump feed the Nexus and have it high up to gravity return to the pond, or fitting 2 pumps and a balance pipe which is quite a complicated thing to set up.
That is one reason it is popular to follow a sieve with a bead- because you can pump feed the bead directly from the sieve but it doesn't need to be raised as water leaves under pressure still. Not sure if I have explained that very well
You could consider following the sieve with a shower?2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Ok so to run my 2 BD without having to run 2 filters as I don't have the space or the funds I'd be better to go sieve then bead/shower or possibly both then uv. If I was to then upgrade to a drum in the future I could add that on or would I need to take parts out and replace. Also would a bead filter and or shower filter be sufficient to run the size pond I'm looking to build.

Hi steve, the right size bead and shower will definatly be ample, its just sizing them right
As said both BD's need to stay seperate with their own valves but can both run into the same pre filter ie. sieve, drum etc...
to upgrade to a drum later its just a case of swapping the sieve out jobby, may need to alter a bit of pipe work but should all be fine.
The problem you would have with a nexus is flow rate imo i think the 200 series is 10,000 flow max which 2 bottom drains unless purged frequently wouldnt get a decent enough flow to keep them clear. (It would only be 5,000 ltr flow on each essentially) i think the 300 series is 14,000ltr max but not sure as dont and have never run a nexus. Good filters but Have heard alot that running them at max flow isnt the best? Plus if your going sieve first then me personaly i would pump feed a nexus or any filtration for that matter, the 2 pumps and balancing act i find is a way over complicated and problamatic way of doing it.
Just some things to think about

Thanks so would I gravity feed the sieve from the BD and then use a pump to run the water from the sieve to the shower or bead filter. Has anyone got a setup like this that could send me a picture please

I see no difference in running 2 bottom drains into a sieve or drum or Nexus?
Why do people think it's okay on a drum or sieve, but not on a nexus?
I don't know why, so am asking.

Because there is normally 2 inlets on sieves and drums (depending on make and model) and only 1 inlet on a nexus
If imo too if the pond is big enough to require 2 bottom drains then usually a nexus will not be sufficient on its own as sole filtration for the duration of the ponds life and extra/2nd line of filtration would normally be added from the off or added further down the line ie a skimmer line being one to point out. Its each to there own but i like to have a 1 hour turn over on my pond so if i had a 20,000 ltr pond any nexus on its own would be no good for me but thats maybe just me.

This is how mine is set up - I used to run both my bottom drain and skimmer into a single 4" pipe then into a Cetus sieve (which has only one input - absolutely no issue provided you have separate valves - I see no reason why you couldn't do the same with a nexus incidentally.
Given the choice of a nexus or a bead I would tend to go for the bead - better fines removal and much easier to run with a sieve. I would recommend fitting a bypass on the bead, if it hasn't already got one though, otherwise they can be a bit lossy.Last edited by pip895; 14-05-2017 at 05:56 AM.

I've done everything myself
I probably wouldn't attempt to fibreglass it tho,had a look at the cost of materials and like Laura said for £500 labour,by a skilled tradesmen,it's not worth messing it up

thanks how did you put the valves on the 2 bottom drains if they were on 1 pipe take it you ran both pipes into the place where the sieve was located and then connected to 1 pipe to run into the sieve or did you do something different. how often does the bead filter need cleaning, only reason I as is that I go away for around 3 weeks in august so would need to know if I could run it for this length of time without people having to clean it for me or if I would need to get the person looking after the animals to clean the filters.

I was surprised at how much the materials were,if they were £200 ish I might have attempted it but I think mine worked about £800 in materials, weren't going to risk it,smooth render and pond paint for me
