    Gray's Pond Build Diary

Have you tested the ph first thing in a morning and then again in an evening bud? You might find a slight swing which be enough to irritate a few of them, air (o2 levels) can directly effect the ph. Might be worth seeing how they act leaving the air on constantly. It would be a good idea to give the main offenders a quick scrape if you can do though just to rule out anything more sinister. The earlier you catch something the better Gray's Pond Build Diary
If your pond and filter are up to speed you shouldn’t be seeing flashing after feeding unless your piling it in. I can feed mine really heavy and get zero flashing or signs of irritation after feeding.

Cheers Lee & Fred, always appreciate the guidance.

The filters are not up to scratch yet. Still very new as Fred says as they’re only 11mths old.

I’ve left the air on all weekend, aside from 10mins here and there when feeding, and no flashes so far that I’ve seen.

I’ll have a go at the PH morning & night and see if there’s any difference between them.

It’s at a constant PH of 8 but I always test it at night when I’m back from work so it’ll be interesting to see what the morning reading is.

I’ll report back! Cheers chaps Gray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build Diary

P.s. I’ve got a scope that my Dad left me, no idea what I’d be looking at but happy to have a go and see if I can get some pics of if comes to it. Always keen to learn more!!

Nice one mate. Good to hear they have stopped flashing.
Mine don t like change. Also if I stop the air flow. 9 times out of 10. They know the net is coming in.
Haha. Ask Lee what it's like trying to catch a fish in my pond. To deep . That's why I don t like netting them. It stresses them to much.
Hope your ph is ok. On the scope side.
I use this as a guide lol.
The magnification you are using is the strength of the eyepiece multiplied by the lens.
So using a x10 eyepiece with x40 objective gives you x400.
I generally give the whole slide the once over at x40 first, that will allow you to find any flukes pretty easily since they are pretty large. I then go up to x100, x200 and finally x400. You won't see costia very well until you are at x200 or above really.

I first look for anything that moves . If I spot movement. Then I play with the lenses to make them larger and clearer.
My eye sight is getting worse as I get older.
I try and get 3x scrapes of the fish.
From nose to tail. Top. sides. And belly
    Good luck mate.
    Fred

Thought I’d add some pics of a few of the Koi in the pond at the moment.

I’m happy to say they are all from guys on this forum and even happier to say they seem to be enjoying their new home!

Still haven’t brought over the prized Koi yet, waiting for the water to settle, etc from the last influx.

Cheers AJM, these Koi are a credit to their previous caretakers. I love ‘em all.

Regards that fish in the last picture. I’m still learning all the names, copies, ages, etc or Koi so the way I describe them is purely by what they look like!!!

However, I believe it’s a Aka Matsuba as it has a red/orange base, metallic in look and has a black net effect on its scales.

Could well be wrong, maybe someone will confirm or deny?

Picked this chap up by accident when I went to buy a feeder off a chap. Saw this Koi, he said it was for sale so I snapped it up.

@Skoosh - if you read this, the orange and black lady loves to eat from my girl’s hands!!! You trained her well Gray's Pond Build Diary

Cheers Freddy, I’m happy with the Koi for sure. They’re good characters.

Some small flashes just from one Koi (the Matsuba) but he seems to flash only near the air dome when it’s off after feeding time.

Parameters are a bit better, KH is up and PH is down, going to test again tonight and I’ll share them.

The Iris are growing well. No flowers yet but guessed it would take maybe a season or so.

Water tested and parameters are as follows:

    KH 7
    GH 5
    NH3 0
    NO2 0.25
    NO3 0.5
    PH 8.5
    PO4 5

Whilst the KH is up, because I dosed with bicarb, the NO2 & NO3 are still higher than I’d like.

PH is on the low side of 8.5 so probably more 8.25.

Maybe a further water change do you guys think?

I’ve bought some more K1 media, some air line and also a small Super Fish air pump so I’m going to look to mature some media in a dustbin to see if getting more mature media in the filters will help as the current media in there isn’t browning up that fast.

Nice one mate. Glad all is well with the fish mate.
My iris flowered 2nd season. This year I had to prune them down. As in height.
Plus trimmed roots on underside of baskets. As they where toppling over in high winds lol.
But they gave a nice yellow flower.

    Gray's Pond Build Diary

So, it’s been a while since I updated here and a few things have been going on.

First of all, the long awaited arrival of the first two of five Koi that I inherited. This was the sole purpose of getting a pond built at my place.

As I’ve said before, the Koi are no show winners but the sentimental value is huge so I’ve been very careful as to how I approach the move.

After the Golides I bought to start things off I added one nice looking orange/red Ogon (lovely chap!) and then added, a few weeks later, four cool looking Koi from a nice guy on here who was moving some on.

Full on NPS then kicked in so I’ve was battling with that for quite some time. The good news is that the NPS taught me a huge amount about the nitrogen cycle, what to look for and how to tackle the various issues as they cropped up. I wouldn’t go as far to say as NPS is a good thing but as a newbie to the game I’m certainly thankful that:

    a) it happened because I learned a lot
    b) no fish were lost
    c) most of all, being a member of this great forum and having all you guys to call on and support me. Gray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build Diary

Three more Koi to add, one coming this weekend and these fellas are big ones. Not sure of the exact size and weight (will update once I’ve netted them) but they are going to test my filters once again so I’m expecting a mild dose of NPS to creep back yet again. This time I’m ready Gray's Pond Build DiaryGray's Pond Build Diary

One of the first two fish I moved is an interesting carp, not Koi - she’s in the first pic. She’s about 15years old, not 100% sure, but the really odd thing is that neither me nor my Dad put her in the pond. So how’d she get in there?? I have no clues.

My Dad swore blind, to his dying days, that I put it in after a fishing trip when I was younger but I know I didn’t. Anyways, never seen her from the side before as he didn’t have a window. In fact, hardly ever saw her because she’s jet black on the top. Such a cool moment to put her in my pond and watch her side-on.

I love Koi but have to say I do love this Carp especially seeing as me & the old man would regularly take piss out of each other like “you put her in there didn’t you?” too which I’d reply “no, you did you dopey old bastard and forgot because you’re old...” Gray's Pond Build Diary

Anyways, I digress! Here she is:

Excuse the green area on the window, I must clean it!

The other fish (actual Koi) that’s gone in now is a slimline male. Nice chap but he seems to be struggling a bit adapting. +20yrs in one pond and now the move I think has upset him a bit. Although he’s now started to feed after having had nothing for 10days so it’s a good sign. Very slow moving, gentle chap who likes to cruise around the window. I guess he’s never seen sideways before!

I do wonder if he might be a little poor sighted. He has some markings on his eyes and when he swims one way past the window I can wave and make sudden moves and he doesn’t flinch. When he swims the other direction and I do the same he scoots off! Also, he seems to like tagging along close with the other Koi. Maybe helps him to navigate. Who knows. Seems happy enough so we’ll see how he gets on.

Picking up another Koi tomorrow as it’s been a few weeks with these two in there now so the parameters have settled as the filters have caught up. Will post a pic of her when she’s in as she’s a big lass!
