Cheers for that. I'm looking forward to seeing them swim around in there new home too! Can't wait, hoping it'll be a nice puddle for them. Gray's Pond Build Diary

Cheers for all the info Fred, very helpful as always. You're right that I'm a little way off rendering but the flaunched corners and edges is now on my list.

I can see on yours that they're a pretty good size too so I'll go with the same idea. I want minimal crud too so it a winner for me.

That polyflex you mention, is this it - Polyflex Polyurethane Sealant 310 Mls https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0046B0RSY

Thanks pal. It's a labour of love but it's bloody addictive! All I want to do is lay blocks and do pipe work. Sadly I've got a day job to pay for it all...

Will keep the pics coming in. Hoping to get some more hours in this weekend. Gray's Pond Build Diary

I got mine from east riding koi co.i think this is link good stuff.

    Sealants and Adhesives

Polyflex Sealant (Black) General Purpose Sealer and Adhesive

A moisture hardened sealant. A sealer with strong adhesion but always remaining flexible under all conditions. Capable of sealing seams and joints and bonding to wood, brick, cement rendering and rigid plastics. Polyflex will also seal around pipe work and bottom drains. When liners are tucked into brickwork it forms an excellent sealant since it allows for movement. Polyflex is supplied in a cartridge and is easily applied with a mastic gun or similar application tool.

    Gray's Pond Build Diary

Had a few hours on Sunday to "fiddle with the pond" as it's now been affectionately termed in our house.

    Q - "Where's Daddy?"
A - "Fiddling with the pond"

Many more years of pond-fiddling ahead I feel...

Got to the point now where TPRs are going in. Decided on putting two in on one side to get the water flowing around nicely. Both will be after the skimmer, when thinking about water circulation. Putting a low-level waterfall in too. It'll be below the coping stones opposite end to the BD but just above water level. Not interested in having a proper tinkling waterfall as the noise of the waterfall on my Dad's pond annoyed me after a while. We live in a very quiet area so it'd just make me want to go to the toilet after an hour of listening to it! Gray's Pond Build Diary

Also decided to keep all my return pipework above ground level at the backside of the pond where it can't be seen but can be easily accessed if need be.

Got the TPR hole sorted by cutting a block at 45 degrees and then setting the space using the TPR plus a few millimetres either side.

It was pretty easy to do if I'm honest. My saw chopped the block like butter and then I set it on a nice fatty mix of mortar, moved the blocks around, tapped them in to place and bingo - nice snug fit.

Popped a couple more layers of blocks above too while I was at it.

This is the low-level TPR. Got a mid-level going in too at the weekend coming.

3 walls are just above ground now so visible progress at last!

Space has been left for the infinity window too. Got proper sign-off on that last week; my daughters fought my corner, so that's a few less blocks to lay.

Fingers crossed for dry weather this weekend otherwise I'll be ordered inside to fit out the shower room I've just ripped out. Suite and tiles have arrived so I don't really have a good enough excuse to work on the pond aside from good weather...

I can't say I'm ever stuck for a bit of DIY!!!!

I like the way you have cut the block bud. And fitted thar TPR. As snug as a bug.
Well impressed. Mine just went in between two blocks and cemented around them
Yours look a lot more professionally done. Yeah mate. Impressed. My infinity window frame got put in with expanding foam. Cement and fiber glass. You would need a tank shell to move it. When my builder used the expanding foam that impressed me. Looking good with the build gray.

Cheers Fred, I do like to have things neat and tidy. Appreciate the kind words! Annoys my wife as everything takes twice as long but my Dad always said "do it right, do it once" so that's my mantra.

However, my finishing on the blocks ain't that tidy though! Ah well, once it's rendering nobody will see is my thinking.

Interesting about how your window went in I'll be tapping you up on that later to get some tips.

I had some nice ideas from people the other month about ratchet straps, gold seal, bits of timber, etc so I've got plenty of things to think about when I eventually get round to fitting the window. Will be in the new year now.

So Wednesday night was the company Xmas party which meant Thursday was going to be a bit of a wash out, aside from a Full English to kick the day off!

That said, once I was home around lunchtime instead of lounging around I chucked my wellies on and got mortar mixing - that blew the cobwebs away!!!

Got a few hours in on the pond and now I have three walls connected and all walls out of the ground. Happy days!

Both TPR ports are sorted, one low and one mid, so it's on to putting in the final return at the opposite end the BD and also dropping the skimmer in.

I'm going to go another three courses up from the highest point (top of the spirit level I've laid against the wall - roughly) which will give me a 7ft depth which will be nice. After my bitching and moaning about the slope I decided to run with, I'm actually pretty pleased now that I stuck to it as the wide mouthed shallower area should look good. I hope...

You can now see where the window is going go. It'll run between the vertical wall on the left of this elevation and stop around where the block is sitting end on. Probably will be just over 2m in length and about a metre high at a guess. God knows how much that will cost. Not thinking about it now...

Will be taking a break from block work for a few days now and instead of fiddling with 4" Koi poo pipes I'll be fiddling with 4" people poo pipes instead as I've got a shower room to build now...wife's orders! Gray's Pond Build Diary

Hopefully I'll get a couple of days on the pond over the break if I can keep my head out of the drinks fridge for long enough!!!! Gray's Pond Build Diary

    Gray's Pond Build Diary

Well it's been 4 months (!) since I updated my build thread so thought I'd add some of the latest.

All the block work is now done thank god. It's taken an age to do it between the day job and renovating the house but I'm finally there. I have to say it's definitely turned out to be a bit of a bigger pond than I first thought! Ah well, maybe I won't get that "I want a bigger pond syndrome" too soon after it's complete...

I'll get a pic of the window space that's now easy to see and that too is a little larger than I'd originally thought. But hey.

I've got a wide mouth skimmer to go in now and then the rendering can start.

TPRs will be added after the first coat and then rendered up to the face plates so they are flush. And then it'll be on to building the filter house. Going to add a third one just to be 100% regards moving the water around as I'll have them all on t-valves so I can control the flow rates to them.

I've decided to go for a Nexus 320, Ultra Sieve and a Cloverleaf 72w UV for the moment. Might add a shower and drum later on but for now I've chosen this set up to get everything running as I'm 99% sure it'll be a straight forward set up from reading up on it all.

I've plumped for a Pro Sequence 18,000 that I bought off Pomster the other month. Tidy bit of kit so hope it pushes the water around nicely.

Think I'll drop a smaller pump on the skimmer, like a Jebao 12,000 variable, so I can play with the flow rate to get the skimmer working it's best.

Decided against a water blade for now as I'll go for a blade-style return from the shower if I get one later.

So that's the plan so far. Please do shout up if you guys have better ideas regards the filter set up as I'm always happy to have my mind changed for the better!

Slightly off topic, but I remember a thread about Herons before and the lively debate about what to do to keep them away. Well, over the last few weeks I think I've nailed it. See the photo of my pretty big Tom farm cat and his new favourite place!!! He's about as a big as a dog and loves anything that flies... I'm going to build him a decent resting place on the back wall of the pond to encourage him to be Head or Pond Security. Gray's Pond Build Diary

    Gray's Pond Build Diary

So it’s been over a year now since I posted an update here so it’s about time!

This old house just keeps me away from finishing the pond but as luck would have it we’ve had a break for about 3 months while the architect sorts phase 3. Or is it 4? God knows...

    Anyways, here’s the latest:

I went for a Nexus 320 as mentioned before but changed to have a Cetus on it with a balance pipe set-up. Tricky to figure it out at first but then it all came together.

The blocks and bits of wood under the pipes are just there for me to get the levels right. They’re on solid brick and mortar supports now all is well and plumb.

I’ve got the Cetus feeding back into the final point on the run where the BD enters the Nexus. I’ve got a variable Jebao pump on the Cetus so I can play with the flow.

Off the T coming out of the ground on the right in the pic is now a 4” Ball balance that will help me purge the BD pipework and this goes straight out into the field.

Went for a 110w EA UV in the end versus a Cloverleaf. Got a good price on it and seems the business. Time will tell.

Skimmer is in now and that’s on a separate line. Again, another variable Jebao pump (7,000) on this to help pull the surface down in to it.

Quite daunting when all my pipe fittings turned up! There was so many to fit. But after a few weekends on the solvent & MEK (not in that way!) they’d all pretty much been stuck into place.

So now is the time to get the window ordered and book in Dave Arnold the glass the thing.

I’ve laid so many bricks around the pond to make it look smart that I’ve become a brick wall critic! The inconsistent mortar lines in some people’s walls around my village is terrible Gray's Pond Build Diary

So here’s hoping that within the next 4-6 weeks I’ll be getting the dechlorinator out of the box, plugging it in to the hose and filling the pool FINALLY!

I’ll get some more pics to post but for now those above the best ones. The latest status of the pond is much more developed than shown. I’ve just been too covered in mortar to pick up my phone and snap some pics...

Hi gray good to see you back buddy.
Hope you and family are all well mate
    You quoted
I’ve got the Cetus feeding back into the final point on the run where the BD enters the Nexus. I’ve got a variable Jebao pump on the Cetus so I can play with the flow.

You mention one pump . Are you running two on the setup. Or just one mate.
Looking at the picture below. It has two on balance line.
And if i remember right one has to be larger then the other.

Looks good pal. Once the glassing is done. Sit there with a nice cold beer. And chill mate.

I have a ea 55 uv. And i think it has been a good buy.
Enjoy mate. Soon be a pond

Hi Fred, good to hear from you again!

All good here. The family of girls is growing faster than a fat Koi! Can't keep up with their feeding needs

Regards the pumps, I've got 3 pumps going in:

    - Sequence Pro 18,000 to pull from the 320 and back to the pond
    - Variable Jebao 7,000 to pull from the Cetus and push into the final run on the balance pipe
    - Variable Jebao 7,000 to pull from the skimmer and pump back to the pond via a small pond return in the top of the wall in a corner

I'm hoping those 7,000 pumps are enough for the skimmer and the Cetus. The one on the skimmer I'm sure will be fine as I over-sized it at 7,000LPH but chose variable so I can turn it down if need be.

Not sure about the 7,000 on the Cetus though. Will have to see what it manages to pump into the main line. I have no issue with it drawing from the Cetus, it's rating is more than enough, but when it also needs to push the water into the main line and that's where I am a little unsure. It'll be easy to see I guess as I can just watch the weir on the Cetus and if plenty of water is going over it then by virtue plenty is going in to the main line is my thinking.

Just ordered the Matsuko switch box with timer and Pump Guard. Seemed like a good buy at £150 for all the tech it comes with. EA have slapped their badge on it so seemed ok to me.

Just need to get my brother in law to run an armoured cable underground for me (he's a sparky) and then I can start hooking up all the electrics! Happy days.

Really starting to come together now.

Although I am now starting to get nervous about other stuff beyond blockwork, piping, etc as I was before! I'm going to sleep thinking about future potential issues like low water flows, leaks, etc

I guess that'll then change to worrying about Koi health and water parameters when the fish are in! Never-ending worry this game...

nice one mate thought you would run with 3 pumps. was just making sure.
on the Matsuko switch box with timer and Pump Guard. i have one of them. there realy good. i have had my pumps been turned off with the pump guard. and a small alarm go off for a few minutes
there hard to get the wires into the small holes. but once all wired up. very good. tells you the wattage running on your pumps as well.
looks like you will have the fish in there soon. enjoy it mate

you will find out how the flow is. when you flash it all up. and what the pumps can do. plus leaks. fingers crossed all runs well and no leaks mate.
    enjoy it mate.

Good to know about the Matsuko box, I liked the write up on it and seemed to do everything I wanted. I'll have a spare port on it too just in case I want to add something else later on so it worked for me.

I've just booked Dave Arnold for the 30th July to get the glassing done so once that's sorted the window glass will be fitted and then it'll be time to fill up the puddle! Can't believe this build is nearly ready for water.

Will keep this thread up to date from hereon in. Cheers.

    Gray's Pond Build Diary

Spent a bit of time outside today between the showers. Managed to get the Nexus air line running around the edge of the filter house to the air pump shelf.

It’s the pump on the left. Went for an EA 95 for this job.

Then I installed the finishing touches to the right hand pump an EA75 to run in to the bottom drain air done.

I’ve installed a Y-piece and a ball valve on one end to allow me to vary the air flow to the bottom drain air dome. I can run max air by having the valve shut but can vary it by opening the valve slightly and bleeding off some of the air.

My own little design so hopefully it works! 🤞
