Done a great job Ray credit to you.
Just been out and changed one of my rubber boots.
Noticed it yesterday a 2ins on the outlet of my pump going to my shower.
It was cracked and bulging could have been a disaster,a couple more have small hairline cracks so will need replacing but I havnt got any more.
I got mine from E/a and Swell but I think these are the Swell ones.John

Thanks John. I'm going to get mine checked every 6 months from now on. I bought from several places. Coastal, QK, Fleabay and Absolute but don't recall where the 1 1/2 came from because I made a lot of the purchases the year before I finished my build. I bought the replacements from Screwfix. They were a bit dearer but much thicker than the ones I have seen in koi outlets. Oh and they are grey.

Do screwfix do 1.5 and 2 ins ?
The thickness of mine are 5mm and feel quite thin.
I have started a thread to see if I can make my own but dont know if pdm is ok for koi.John

I could only find 1 1/2 when I looked but I suppose they may do. The grey one I got seemed like double the thickness or more of the crap one it replaced. EPDM should be ok, isn't that what they make pond liners out of? If so, don't see an issue.

Hi Rayman,
yes indeed, after lots of thought and looking into build options I decided to get it built by professionals from beginning to end as opposed trying to save money and go preformed, being new with absolutely no knowledge of the filtration and set up I still would of needed to pay for someone to come in and set it all up and show me what's what, for sure I am paying more this way as a lot more labour is involved and materials but it will stand the test of time where as prefomed over many years would not stand up so well, do it once and do it properly was my view, in addition the thought of hiring a 100t crane and lifting this substantial unit over my house and manoeuvre between fence and house etc was just a bit daunting, any how committed and near the end of the build so very pleased I went this route now, thanks Steve.

So today I did another inspection of all the rubber boots on my system due to a previous failure. Lo and behold, yet another of the 1 1/2 inch boots has failed. This time its the one on the other side of the pump which failed previously. This one was much worse!
I was going to hard pipe both sides into the pump but I don't have enough room to do so. I am wondering if the heated water has anything to do with it, as these are the only 2 I have had any problems with. I think it's a strong possibility. Anyway, moral of the story folks, check those rubber boots regularly as part of your routine maintenance.

Looks nasty Ray as there is a split in the middle.
Would it help if the pipes were pushed up tight together before putting the boot on,just a thought as it would be more support.John

Do you know what brand they are or if they're branded at all?
Does look like its been clamped up too tight but that doesn't explain the split in the middle.
When you consider car radiator hoses are clamped up tight, go through massive temperature cycles, are constantly vibrating, yet failures like this are almost unheard of.
Surely the quality of the boots has to be questioned here.

Here we go again.....my pond build Mk 4
Hi Raymam
Just picked up on your post.
Instead of hard piping either side of the pump, have you thought about de-mountable joints?
I changed one of my pumps to the de-mountable fittings a couple of months ago after replacing my UV unit and replumbing.
The de-mountable fittings don’t take up much more space than the rubber fittings, and easily removed if replacing the pump.
