Feline's new pond.
Well, though maybe I should start a pond build thread
This isn't going to be all done and dusted in a week. I have work and other real life stuff to do too sadly
I will stick up some photos of my progress as things go on.
The plan:
Fish remain in my current pond throughout the build as I am building on the other side of the garden
New armoured cable, mains feed and drain link are needed.
Rough estimated final size 6000 gallons.
Around 5.3m x 4.3m external size (rectangle with the golden ratio).
Raised 70cm out of the ground with a 2m window (infinity).
Concrete base.
Block walls (rendered outside).
Celotex/Kingspan insulation.
Fibreglass.
2 x 4" BDs, gravity fed skimmer.
Filter house for a drum and a hidden shower with spigot tray to return underwater (I don't want to see or hear a shower but I would like to have one ).
Possibly also aerated K1 filter.
Don't know if can afford to get ASHP initially- would plan to add at later date if not.
Finally nice patio area between the pond and the french doors of my lounge and kitchen/diner.
Expected completion by July 2016 (but have August as a contingency month if things go to crap).

Like the size feline. Good to have another pond build going on beside my own right now. I read a few months ago. Your last build. I was impressed with your DIY skills. I learned lots of builds like yours.and others on this site. I think there is about five or six builds going on right now.i have been following most of them. My own is doing well outside walls more or less completed. Blocks on inside halfway up. Just to bring them up.and skimmer to fit. Getting there. Good luck with the build all the best. Fred

Very impressed, quite an ambitious project.
Not a criticism, but for anyone else building on this scale you can hire these big skips with part of one end which folds down. I used one of these and used a scaffold plank as a ramp and ran the spoil up in a barrow, it didn't fall off the ramp that many times! It saves moving the spoil twice!
I needed three skips for my 12' X 9' X 5' pool, but that was thirty years ago when proportionately, skips were much cheaper to hire."The information's out there,

I think its cheaper to hire a grab truck than a skip.
What is the "golden ratio" that you refer to? I haven't heard of that.

Are you going to tackle the glassing yourself? Or get quotes from the pro's?

You're probably right about the grab truck. I got a deal on the skips , as our house was built on farmland so the spoil was ideal to be used as top soil. So the skip hire company were going to sell it on. It might be worth finding out about that possibility.
Now it costs a fortune to dispose of anything, that's why the price is built into the hire.

I've gone down the grab lorry route because it's way cheaper- plus I don't have to move the soil again, the lorry will grab it straight off the drive
Exactly like my last pond build I did underestimate the sheer quantity of spoil. I have an 18 tonne 8 wheel grab lorry coming on Monday, but will need at least one more to get all of it including my old patio slabs which are also going. I might break some of them up to use as hardcore in the base though. I reckon there will end up being around 40 tonnes to get rid of altogether Dread to think what that would cost in skips- I had 2 fairly small skips in my last pond build which was a fraction of the size and they cost £450!
I'm currently working a night shift so had to sleep in a bit today. Only got a couple of hours digging done in the afternoon before coming to work.
I might not get much done tomorrow if I'm tired. It is now over 3/4 dug though.
The tree roots are a bit of a pain at one end of the hole. I'm undecided on getting a chain saw to cut through them easier than my little pruning saw. Not sure I would be 100% safe with a chain saw though

It's supposed to be the most aesthetically pleasing ratio for a rectangle
