my edging stones on the top and sides have been glued in place with a tile glue (here we can get one for external use) and they are holding perfectly.

it only takes a millimeter or 2 of glue, so you could just glue them back on with that.

I actually started working back in the garden a couple of months ago now, it started off with me having to repair the broken wooden front gate, which had blown shut over the winter and split. I managed to glue and screw it back together, completely sanded it down and then filled and stained it. It felt good to do something productive for a change. This led me to look at the mess in the front, which still had 3 x 8' x 4' boards, full of rubbish from 4 years ago and a jungle of weeds in the borders. So with renewed enthusiasm I worked my way around around the front border, digging them over and putting down weed membrane, chippings and some new plants. This led to the back/side passage which had only been partially slabbed, it looked like this in the beginning ...

    Pointys Murky Puddle Upgrade-trench1-jpg

I finally finished the slabs and gave the fence panels a coat of ducksback and now it looks like this. (it's nice to be able to walk out to the back garden with bare feet)

    Attachment 28256

The next job was to tackle the sump and water butts. So on a hot sunny day I geared up with a heat gun and various knives/saws and commenced battle with the dreaded buried water butt. After a fierce battle that latest a couple of hours, he lay slain in pieces in the garden...

    Attachment 28257

The sump was then painted with some A1 pond paint and the flexible pipe replaced with solid waste. The bilge pump that fills the water butts (which you can't quite see in the following picture) is cable tied to the bottom of the pipe leading too the sump pump. This means that by undoing the flexible connection at the top, I can lift the whole lot out in one go for cleaning/maintenance.

    Attachment 28258

The water butts were then relocated to the other side of the small tool shed. The flexible hose and float switch wires were fed inside some 40mm waste pipe to keep them safe. The old smaller Nexus waste ball valve just happened to screw into the tap connection on the water butt, which means I can now fill a watering can much faster than the original tap's pee speed.

    Attachment 28259Attachment 28260

To finish off this corner of the garden, the fence panels were painted and the tool shed was revamped, which went from being a quick paint job to taking the whole roof off and adding some cross supports due to excess sagging

    Attachment 28261

While digging though the rubbish out front, I found half a dozen 3.6m lengths of shiplap, left over from the pond, which I duly converted into a storage box for the patio furniture cushions.

    Attachment 28262

I have also done various other bit and bobs not shown above. All fence panels have been painted, both decks have been sanded and re-stained, in fact the smaller one I completely relaid as I wasn't happy with the spacing. The filter house finally has a roof, but I need to finish off some bits before I reveal it. I rebuilt the Evo 55 and saw the bottom drain in the pond this week for the first time in a year or more.

As if I didn't have enough to do, I have also noticed another problem. Virtually all of my edging stones, that finish off the upper pond level, have come loose. They were laid on a normal bed of mortar but I wonder if a sharp sand mix would be better? Is there something I can add to the mix to make them stick better?

Finally, another corner of the garden finished.

    sun circle.jpg

It was my first attempt at laying a circle patio kit, and although I am sure I could do a better job if I did it again, overall I don't think it looks too bad. As luck would have it, a 1.5" pressure pipe straight joint is the perfect size for a brabantia washing line pole.

The last couple of days I decided it was time to turn my attention to the pond and give it a freshen up. When I built it, I used some eco paint on the pergola, which has stood the test of time well. I didn't quite have enough to give it all a another coat so I went to order some more, only to find it has gone from £20 to £45 for 5l. (Originally I got it from Eco Paints but now appears to be sold by Lakeland Paints) So it was off to B&Q for 5l of black Ducksback for a tenner instead. After covering the pond I was able to apply it with a fence roller and extension arm without too much trouble. The pond cladding was painted using Cuprinol shades, and it still looked pretty good, so a single coat was all that was required to brighten it up.

The blanket weed went mad a few weeks back and I got some Aqua Source Blanket Resolve treatment to try. With one dose the blanket weed is nearly gone after 10 days, so I would definitely recommend it. I also bought some rolls of reed screening I intend to put on the roof of the pergola to give the pond a bit more shade. The plan is to lay it along the existing cross beams and put some roofing battens at 90 degrees to clamp it down. Has anyone else done this and did it survive strong winds?

I have been putting off the back wall for now and may just paint it for this year and then sort it out next year, fund permitting. As for the filter house I think I have pretty much decided I am going to take the outer brick skin down and clad it to match the pond. I have never really like the brickwork from the moment it was done and think it is the best option.

I'll post some more pics as and when I get some more done.

Hi Pointy, I have the split bamboo four mtrs x one mtr from tool station (cheapest I found and free del) on my roof and doing well.
I laid it out and used some galvanised wire ( £1 from Asda ) with staples over the top of it,staple it down one end and pull it tight with pliers at the other end then staple it down.
The wire holds it down well and hasn't moved in strong winds and you cant see it.

    Looking good

That blanket weed resolve is good stuff as although it says to use 4 doses 10 days apart the most I have ever needed was 2 doses as I was told that as soon as the blanket weed has gone you don't need any more doses Each pond is different so see how you get on with it and why add anything if you don't need to?

I managed to get the reed screening up, although I can't say I am super keen on it. It was purchased on a whim while out shopping a couple of weeks ago, as it was on offer. It does offer a little shade for the pond though and will do for now. I will probably replace it with some bamboo in the future though. I also had to replace one of the 5 x 2 beams as it was banana shaped and very badly twisted vertically as well. Try as I did, I couldn't straighten it and it was bugging the hell out of me. The problem is a 4.8m length of wood is twice as long as my car, but god bless my daughter though for walking the mile and a quarter down to Travis Perkins and then carrying a 4.8m length of 5 x 2 back with me on a very hot sunny afternoon.

Next it was time to set about the filter house bricks as I had finally made the decision to take them down. It's obviously frustrating that the cost of the original materials and labour was going to end up in a skip and I had to purchase new materials on top of that, but I knew I wouldn't be happy with it, so I set about the bricks with my big hammer drill. I didn't really anticipate any problems, which was obviously a mistake, especially with the way some parts of this project have gone.

Some of the bricks came off super easy but the bottom few courses on each side were a nightmare, the mortar was like concrete and the bricks were breaking before the mortar. On the last side the SDS chuck on my drill decided to fall to pieces putting a premature end to the proceedings, although I expect my neighbours were happy about that! After a quick trip to Screwfix early the next morning for a new drill the remaining bricks were removed and I am now left with this mess to tidy up.

Other that the top corner pieces I managed to keep the blocks in tact and just have a crap load of making good to do. I also removed all of the edging stones so I could get rid of all the rubble at once and finish all of the destruction in one go.

I am also pleased to announce that for the first time in 5 years my front drive is clear and I could actually park a car on it!
