Critique time
Bit of fun. My mother chose this at a forum day at cuttlebrook koi farm.
Not an expensive fishy by any means and probably the worse fish in the pond. But this fella/Sheila surprised me
How do you see it developing?
How will the sumi develop?
Male or female?
Don't hold back, I know it's not a stunner lol.

Will keep updating this thread with pics in time..

Hello mate the body shape looks a bit odd at the minute and as you say it doesn't look like a stunner. But I can see the black or sumi is going to come through and make this a lovely fish I think.
Female and I would deffo take a gamble and give it pond space.

From the pic the skin does not look great but there is loads of sumi showing through. I can't tell if it a T showa or sanke but I the sumi looks more sanke to me.
As for how it may develop, I would guess the underlying sumi is coming through, the T spot has fallen off (possibly the best thing that could happen) and the skin is thickening to give it a more pleasing overall appearance.
It will be around the 45cm mark at the moment with a marked improvement in the body shape.
Male or female? I have no idea TBH I think I have stuck my neck out for enough for one evening.
Ps. If it turns into a Bekko you will have to show it.

Keep it coming guys
As said, I had no say in choosing this fish! It is the cheapest fish I've had in 5 years.
Saying this however ...it did come 1st in size 1 Tancho at Worthing 2013. Up against 3 or 4 others I think, can't remember. I showed Mark Davis of the farm, and he was questioning himself as to how he sold it for so cheap haha.
When I see my Mum, I still here "I told you so" lol. I was reluctant to even take it. But I thought, if it didn't get placed, well then I have an excuse to move it on, as pond space is precious! Oh well, that didn't work!
Body shape ain't great, tancho spot going walk about. 90% sure its male, but couldn't give a monkeys if it was female or male. But when in a bowl, the sumi and white skin is really nice. Bit of a bad picture I suppose.

Hi Mike,
great post,we have had a similar thing with one of our koi that we bought 3 years ago to grow on over winter as a bit of fun.
It's the cheapest koi in the pond (was part of a 4 for £50 offer from Dave at coastal koi,so £12.50)
the only thing I liked about it was the white skin everything else was screaming at me Nooooo lol
So would you give it a go ????
This pic is the day we got it August 2011 at 4"
I'll post the latsest pic later
Please all comment wether or not you'd of bought it or not

In all honesty mate.
Probably not
Lol I didn't want the one I ended up having. But it turned out to be good value. Only £25 mine was. Can't complain really haha. One thing I was really surprised with, was the growth. I wasn't expecting much but doubling in size in 6 months and a total of 3 weeks of no food, with the Worthing Show and EofE preparation. It's done pretty well!
I bet it's a surprisingly nice one now Gaz. Just goes to show we know nothing about smaller koi, or koi full stop !! looking forward to updated pics

Shows what I know about picking small Koi lol
Keep showing Dave(coastal Koi) the updated pics when we see him :-)
She won 3rd at last years winter show size 3 Tancho and 2nd at the East of England show size 3 Tancho
We were taking her to this year's winter show but have decided to not take our vat this year and to let them have a growing year in the pond
Don't think we'll ever pick another small Koi that turns out this well but that's the great thing about this hobby....you never know ;-)

Mike, your tancho actually looks better with less sumi.
As the skin on the head has thickened covering the grey matter inside the tancho spot looks much nicer and with head being wider it seems to sit more on top too.
Gaz, your fish reminds me of the first koi that I bought, six for a tenner, twenty years ago. Those six koi cost me far more money than I ever dreamed.
Would I have bought it? No way, £12.50 buys four pints of beer a much better investment.
I'm sure that your next pic will make me eat my words.

Just goes to show everyone you don't need loads off money to buy quality koi. Just need to be one lucky man. She's a stunner mate.
