Friendly Chagoi ?
Just browsing some of the other threads , I notice lots of people have nice things to say about the Chagoi variety .
As a begginner , my eye tends to be taken by the more "striking" looking patterned fish .
In my ignorance , I hadnt realised that sometimes personality can be more important than good looks !
Is it true that these fish are friendlier and tame than other varieties , and can even encourage the other fish in the pond to be less shy ?
Ive had a few issues with parasites , this year , and my fish are particularly skittish at the moment .
I`ll have to get myself a chagoi or two , next year , and see if it can raise the spirits a little

Yes I would agree with that statement my chagoi is always the first up to feed and eats double what the other fish eat. None of my fish are friendly and swim away when I come near however he has definitely improved there confidence a bit. It might take a couple more years for the to be hand feeding.

I found that by holding treats in the water for a hour my koi started to hand feed. must say its always the chagoi that comes first now but as soon as the fish see me their up waiting for food and eat out my hands with no problems now. i know an hour is a long time but just keep trying and they will hand feed in the end. what i love most about the chagoi is how it makes the other fish settle so you I would say they do calm the pond

My chagoi does not hand feed.
My ochiba, soragoi and showa can not only be hand fed, but also they enjoy a stroke on the nose just for fun.
So I have to say I can disprove the chagoi as always being the friendliest in the pond.

Like Stu my Chagoi is not a leader and does not come up first to feed. My Hi Utsuri and a Showa are normally the first two up and others soon follow. We are not quite at the hand-feeding stage yet but are getting closer. We always stand at the same place beside the pond and put the food right up to the edge nearest where we are standing. Gradually they are becoming bolder and happy to feed while we are up close. We had hoped our Chagoi would encourage others to be tame but as yet it is quite young and seems relatively shy.

Perhaps it's a 'size' thing. My chagoi is the largest I have and is very friendly and has no problem hand feeding or a stroke of the head!
The others aren't far behind though1630 Gallon raised pond

You know it's strange as Chag's are supposed to be the tamest in the pond, but I find that the koi that are most tame in my pond are based on breeder or supplier. Let me give you an example in order of Tameness.

My old chagoi did settle my other koi down when I first got it and was always first up for food but since I lost it my biggest ochiba is now as tame as the chag was and will feed from my hand and quite offer will have a suck of a finger or thumb
I can't wait for next yr to grow on my two new chags and try and get the others feeding from my hand I think my newest ochiba will be next though as it has come on loads in both size and friendliness in the 3 months I've had him but I hope the two chags come on as well as the last one did

That's amazing, to be able to list your fish in order of how tame they are. Is it according to how quickly they come up to feed?
I'm picturing you standing by the pond with a stop-watch and clipboard - lol!
Are they all tame enough to hand feed? If not which ones are?

The top 5 of those hand feed.
6 & 7 will eat while you are hand feeding the others.
8,9 & 10 will be hesitant about eating if you have your hands near the surface.

My chag is about 28inch, the biggest in the pond and from the min I dropped her in she was up being stroked, she's always the 1st up either for a play or food, when I got in the pond few months back to do some pointing up she was trying to suck on my chin and ears, very tame in my opinion and as she's so big she looks great just swimming about
