    Sanke ? Showa ?

Hi who can tell me if my koi is a ginrin sanke or a ginrin show. I see some sumi developing on the head.

    Hi there,

Its very hard to tell from the pic without seeing it in the flesh and looking at the other fins and flanks... However, based on what i can see, I can make the following observations.

The grey area on the top of the head, which is a very common trait and often mistaken for underlying sumi on young koi, looks to me like it will fade away as the koi grows and not develop into sumi. Meaning it will have a Sanke head pattern.

The fins don't have sumi motoguro like on Showa. It does have sumi stripes on the tail fin which will likely develop on the pectoral fins which also says Sanke.

The sumi on the back is fairly heavy for a young koi and is likely to get heavier as the koi grows and develops. It doesn't matter how heavy the sumi is on the back, if it doesn't wrap below the lateral lines of the koi flanks then this also suggest its a Sanke.

With the addition of the metallic scales and the above, I would say Gin Rin Sanke.

Sumi can hold many surprises so it will be interesting if you can post another pic next year to see how its developing!

    Enjoy.

    Regards

    Jon
